Rubio Unveils 'America First' Visa Plan in India, Prioritizing Business Ties

· · 2 min read

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced an 'America First' visa schedule in New Delhi, prioritizing business professionals to strengthen economic engagement with India. This new policy aims to deepen bilateral ties amidst evolving global dynamics.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during his inaugural official visit to India, announced a new “America First” visa schedule designed to prioritize business professionals. Speaking at the dedication ceremony of the US Embassy Support Annex Building in New Delhi, Rubio underscored India's pivotal role in the United States' Indo-Pacific strategy.

New Visa Policy Focuses on Economic Engagement

The newly proposed visa framework, according to Rubio, aims to significantly bolster bilateral economic ties between the two nations. “We're introducing a new America First visa schedule that prioritizes business professionals that strengthen these ties,” Rubio stated during the event. This announcement follows a recent statement from the Trump administration indicating that some temporary visa holders in the US might need to return to their home countries before applying for a Green Card.

Rubio emphasized that the “America First” visa policy is specifically crafted to favor individuals whose professional work directly enhances business links and economic engagement with the United States.

Strengthening India-US Diplomatic and Strategic Partnership

Rubio's visit comes at a critical juncture, as Washington and New Delhi navigate global trade tensions, ongoing conflicts in West Asia, and shifting power dynamics across the Indo-Pacific. During his trip, Rubio met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conveying an invitation from US President Donald Trump for Modi to visit the White House.

Extensive discussions are anticipated between Secretary Rubio and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, covering a broad spectrum of issues including defense cooperation, regional security, trade, and technology partnerships. Officials familiar with the talks also indicated that US-Iran tensions and concerns regarding global energy supplies are likely to be prominent topics.

The visit also precedes the upcoming Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) foreign ministers’ meeting, scheduled for May 26 in New Delhi. Leaders from the US, India, Japan, and Australia are set to discuss critical issues such as maritime security, resilient supply chains, and regional stability.

Rubio's Itinerary Highlights Symbolic Engagements

Before arriving in New Delhi, Secretary Rubio made a stop in Kolkata, where he paid respects at the Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa. This visit marked the first by a serving top American diplomat to Kolkata in nearly 14 years, highlighting the symbolic importance attached to his trip.

Beyond Delhi, Rubio's itinerary also includes visits to the historic cities of Agra and Jaipur, further underscoring the comprehensive nature of his engagement with India.
