In a significant push for water conservation and agricultural revival, the Ladakh administration has commenced a project to channel approximately 90 million liters of glacier-melt water every day into the Igoo-Phey Irrigation Canal. This crucial intervention is poised to irrigate more than 1,000 acres of land and provide vital water resources to nearly 12 villages.
Strategic Diversion Boosts Water Supply
Previously, a substantial quantity of water from the Stok village Nallah in Leh flowed unused into the Indus River. The administration has now ingeniously redirected a portion of this flow into the existing irrigation network. This was achieved through simple earthwork, requiring no significant capital expenditure, highlighting a cost-effective approach to a long-standing challenge.
The initiative followed directions from Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, who identified locations where glacier and snowmelt water could be effectively utilized for agriculture instead of being lost to the river. On August 14, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department created two trenches using a JCB to divert excess water from the main channel of Stok Nallah towards the Igoo-Phey Canal.
Increased Flow for the Igoo-Phey Canal
The Stok Nallah's discharge was assessed at approximately 36.60 cusecs, equating to nearly 90 million liters over a 24-hour period. Of this, about 26 cusecs has been successfully diverted to the canal, with 19 cusecs allocated for Igoo village and seven cusecs for Phey village. Plans are also underway to utilize the remaining 10 cusecs.
The 43-km-long Igoo-Phey Canal, originally constructed between 1979 and 2005, has historically suffered from inadequate water supply, rendering some sections defunct despite available water sources. This latest diversion is expected to significantly boost the canal's water flow, increasing it from approximately 50 cusecs to nearly 80 cusecs. This improved availability will allow daily water distribution to all 12 beneficiary villages, replacing the previous roster system necessitated by limited supply.
Transforming Ladakh's Cold Desert Agriculture
The increased water availability is anticipated to expand irrigation across more than 1,000 acres of land that have remained barren due to insufficient canal water. This intervention is projected to:
- Improve agricultural productivity.
- Increase crop yields and farm incomes.
- Generate more employment opportunities in the rural economy.
Ladakh's unique cold-desert geography makes water availability a critical determinant for agricultural viability. While the region possesses substantial glacier and snowmelt resources, many agricultural areas have historically faced severe irrigation shortages.
A Model for Sustainable Water Management
Lieutenant Governor Saxena hailed the initiative as proof that large-scale water management can be achieved through relatively simple and economical methods. He described it as a "monumental step toward our vision of a Green, Water-Secure and Self-Sustaining Ladakh."
The administration plans to explore similar interventions across the Union Territory, with the overarching goal of enhancing water security, strengthening agriculture, and building greater resilience within the region's communities.
