Refurbished Gadgets Gain Traction in India as New Device Prices Climb

· · 2 min read

As new smartphone and laptop prices soar, Indian consumers are increasingly turning to certified refurbished devices. This market is experiencing significant growth, with buyers seeking premium tech without the flagship cost.

India's refurbished electronics market is set for a breakout year in 2026, driven by consumers seeking premium devices at more accessible prices. With the cost of new smartphones and laptops continuing to rise, certified pre-owned gadgets are no longer just a budget alternative but a mainstream purchasing choice, according to industry analysts.

Smartphones Lead the Refurbished Surge

The organized refurbished smartphone market is projected to grow by approximately 12% this year, even as new smartphone shipments are expected to decline. This growth is fueled by a widening price gap, making pre-owned devices an increasingly smart acquisition.

Premium brands are seeing significant demand in this segment. Refurbished iPhones and MacBooks are particularly popular, as consumers look for high-end technology at substantially reduced prices. Samsung's flagship Galaxy models and other premium Android devices are also experiencing strong interest. Industry estimates suggest that nearly two-thirds of this year's refurbished smartphone sales will fall within the ₹15,000-₹30,000 price bracket, where buyers prioritize better specifications within a constrained budget.

Laptops Join the Trend

The momentum extends beyond smartphones. India's refurbished laptop market is also anticipated to achieve double-digit growth. This surge is attributed to the escalating prices of new PCs, primarily due to rising component costs, especially memory chips. Students, professionals, and small businesses are increasingly opting for certified refurbished laptops, which come with warranties and quality checks, offering significant savings over new machines. Enterprises are also leveraging refurbished systems to optimize their IT expenditure.

Structural Shift in Consumer Behavior

Experts indicate that this market shift is driven by more than just affordability. Consumers are becoming increasingly comfortable with certified refurbished devices, thanks to improved grading standards, robust warranties, and verified sourcing from organized sellers. Longer device replacement cycles also play a role; smartphones now last nearly three years on average, making upgrades less frequent and more considered.

As the market matures, consumer confidence is becoming as crucial as pricing. Buyers prioritize certified products backed by transparent quality checks and warranties over simply the cheapest options. Manufacturers and major retailers are now launching their own certified refurbished programs, signaling the segment's integration into the mainstream. Rather than significantly impacting new device sales, refurbished gadgets are expected to expand the overall market by making premium technology accessible to a broader audience, including first-time buyers who may eventually transition to new products.
