Canberra has been named the world's best city for quality of life in 2026, according to the Oxford Economics' Global Cities Index. Europe dominates the top 30, with Bergen and Singapore completing the top three.

Canberra, Australia's capital, has been recognized as the world's best city for quality of life in 2026, according to a new ranking based on Oxford Economics’ Global Cities Index. The Australian city achieved a perfect score of 100, outperforming many larger and more globally renowned urban centers.

Following Canberra in the prestigious list are Bergen, Norway, in second place with a score of 94.3, and Singapore, securing the third position with 91.6. The comprehensive ranking, published by Visual Capitalist, highlights that European cities overwhelmingly dominate the top tier, accounting for 23 of the top 30 positions globally.

Factors Influencing Quality of Life Rankings

The Oxford Economics’ 2026 Global Cities Index, which covers 1,000 cities worldwide, evaluates urban centers on a range of factors crucial to everyday living. These indicators extend beyond a city's reputation as a business or cultural hub and include:

  • Income levels and income equality
  • Housing expenditure
  • Life expectancy
  • Crime rates
  • Access to recreational and cultural facilities

The findings emphasize how affordability, safety, robust public amenities, and strong economic conditions are pivotal in shaping a city's overall quality of life.

Canberra's Recipe for Success

Canberra's top ranking stems from its consistent strong performance across these key quality-of-life metrics. The city boasts relatively high salaries and notably lower income inequality. A significant concentration of stable, well-paying government jobs contributes to its economic stability and resident satisfaction.

Furthermore, the Australian capital scores highly in life expectancy and the availability of recreational and cultural facilities, especially when considered relative to its population size. Interestingly, while Canberra ranks first for quality of life, it stands at 45th in the overall Global Cities Index, demonstrating that an excellent standard of living doesn't always correlate with being a leading economic powerhouse.

European Dominance in the Top 30

Europe emerged as the strongest-performing region in the quality of life ranking, with a remarkable 23 cities featuring in the top 30. Countries like Norway, Switzerland, Germany, France, and Italy show particularly strong representation.

  • Norway: Bergen (2nd) and Oslo (6th) both secured spots in the top six.
  • Switzerland: Bern (5th), Basel (11th), and Zurich (14th) highlight Switzerland's high standards.
  • Germany: Five German cities — Dresden (8th), Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, and Freiburg im Breisgau — made it into the top 21.
  • France: Grenoble (4th) and Paris (10th) represent France in the top ten.
  • Italy: Venice, Padua, and Genoa are among Italy's representatives in the top 30.

This strong European showing underscores the region's consistent performance in areas such as equitable income distribution, public health, manageable housing costs, and extensive access to cultural and leisure amenities.
