In a remarkable turn of fortune, seven daily wage workers from Sarkoha village in Madhya Pradesh’s Panna district have discovered a substantial 17.96-carat, gem-quality diamond. The find, estimated to fetch upwards of ₹50 lakh at a government auction, occurred after heavy rainfall, bringing an unexpected windfall to the group who had previously struggled with their livelihoods.
The Fortuitous Discovery
Leaseholder Akhilesh Pal and his six partners had been mining in the area for approximately two years without significant success, leading them to temporarily abandon one section of their leased site. Following a period of intense rain, the group returned to inspect their mining operations. It was during this inspection that Pal noticed an unusual sparkle on the surface of the soil in the previously abandoned section.
“We had been mining there for about two years,” Pal stated, “but we had no luck, so we closed the mine for a year. We had started another mine right next to it. When we went there to inspect the new one, we also looked inside the old mine, and that’s where we found it—right on top.”
Upon closer examination, the shining object was confirmed to be a diamond. News of the discovery quickly spread, generating considerable excitement among local villagers and the mining community in the Panna district, an area historically known for its diamond reserves.
Valuation and Auction Process
According to Ravi Patel, a Panna diamond official, the stone weighs 17.96 carats and is of excellent gem quality, making it suitable for fine jewelry. While experts have placed its preliminary value at over ₹50 lakh, the precise final price will be determined at a government auction, which is anticipated to take place in the first half of October.
Under the established government process, a royalty and applicable taxes, totaling around 12%, will be deducted from the auction proceeds. The remaining balance will then be distributed equally among the seven finders.
A New Future for Daily Wage Workers
This discovery represents a profound shift for the workers, all of whom previously relied on daily wages for their income. The net amount, once distributed, is expected to be life-changing. For three of the partners—Santosh, Sharman, and Arun, aged between 30 and 38—the newfound wealth offers the opportunity to overcome significant financial hurdles, including the inability to afford marriage due to lack of funds.
The group collectively emphasizes that the discovery is a direct result of their shared effort and perseverance. They have already begun making plans for their expected earnings, with key priorities including replacing their current residences with permanent homes and ensuring better educational opportunities for their children.
The 17.96-carat diamond has been securely deposited at the government diamond office in Panna and will remain there until all necessary legal and administrative procedures are completed before the auction.
