· · 3 min read

Non-Resident Indians can earn significant returns on NRE fixed deposits, with several banks offering 7% or more. DCB Bank currently provides the highest rate at 8.05% for specific tenures, combining fixed returns with tax benefits.

Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) looking to secure their overseas earnings in India have a compelling option in Non-Resident External (NRE) fixed deposits. These deposits combine attractive fixed returns with significant tax benefits and the crucial advantage of full repatriation.

Several Indian banks are currently offering interest rates of 7% or more on select NRE deposit tenures, with some reaching as high as 8.05% for deposits under ₹3 crore. This makes NRE FDs a particularly appealing investment avenue for NRIs seeking stable growth and financial flexibility.

Leading NRE Fixed Deposit Rates

Among the banks analyzed, DCB Bank stands out by offering the highest rate of 8.05% for NRE deposits with a tenure exceeding one year and extending up to three years. For other tenures, DCB Bank offers 7.10% for one year, 7.40% for more than three years to five years, and 7.25% for more than five years to ten years.

IndusInd Bank also presents competitive rates, with 7.75% for one-year NRE deposits. Its rates for deposits between one and three years range from 7.25% to 7.99%. For longer durations, IndusInd Bank offers 7.25% for three to five years and 7% for five to ten years.

  • Karur Vysya Bank, City Union Bank, Federal Bank, and Tamilnad Mercantile Bank are offering 7% for one-year NRE deposits.

For the popular one-to-three-year category, Federal Bank offers rates between 7.15% and 7.50%, while Saraswat Co-operative Bank provides 7% to 7.50%. Other major banks like Union Bank of India, Canara Bank, Bank of Baroda, SBI, Axis Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank also feature rates of 7% or more for specific tenures, demonstrating a broad competitive landscape.

Understanding NRE Fixed Deposits

An NRE fixed deposit is a term deposit opened through a Non-Resident External account. The funds deposited are sourced from overseas earnings remitted to India and are maintained in Indian rupees. These accounts are available to NRIs and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs).

Key Benefits for NRIs

  • Full Repatriation: Both the principal amount and the interest earned on NRE deposits are fully repatriable, meaning they can be freely transferred back overseas.
  • Tax-Free Interest: Interest earned on NRE deposits is exempt from tax in India for eligible NRIs, making it a highly tax-efficient investment.

It is important for investors to consider the potential impact of rupee exchange rate fluctuations, as the value of returns in an NRI's home currency can be affected by these changes.

NRE vs. NRO Deposits

While NRE deposits are ideal for parking overseas earnings, Non-Resident Ordinary (NRO) deposits serve a different purpose. NRO accounts are designed for income earned within India, such as rent, dividends, pensions, or proceeds from property sales. A key distinction is that interest earned on NRO deposits is taxable in India, and repatriation of funds from NRO accounts is subject to specific rules and limits.

The choice between an NRE and an NRO deposit ultimately depends on the source of the funds, the desired tax treatment, repatriation needs, the investment tenure, and the interest rates offered by various banks.
