Railway Stocks IRFC, IRCTC Hit 52-Week Lows; Analysts Advise Caution

· · 3 min read

Shares of Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) and Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) both reached new 52-week lows on Friday. Analysts suggest a bearish outlook, with some advising investors to exit existing positions.

Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) and Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) shares plummeted to fresh 52-week lows on Friday, September 11, 2026. This downturn comes amidst a broader cooling in the railway sector, prompting analysts to urge caution for investors.

IRCTC Shares Plummet

IRCTC stock registered a 52-week low of Rs 462.25 during the current trading session, pulling its market capitalization down to Rs 37,084 crore. The stock's Relative Strength Index (RSI) stood at 30.5, indicating it is nearing the oversold zone where selling pressure significantly outweighs buying interest. Furthermore, IRCTC shares are trading below their 5-day, 10-day, 20-day, 30-day, 50-day, 100-day, 150-day, and 200-day simple moving averages, signaling a strong bearish trend.

Jigar S Patel from Anand Rathi noted that IRCTC is currently experiencing a range-bound trading structure, with significant support at Rs 450 and resistance around Rs 492. A sustained breakout above Rs 492, backed by strong volumes, could signal an uptrend towards Rs 530. However, Virat Jagad, Senior Technical Research Analyst at Bonanza Portfolio, described IRCTC as being in a clear bearish structure, trading below major Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs) with a weak RSI and persistent selling pressure. Jagad explicitly stated, "No recommendation to hold; existing positions can be exited."

IRFC Experiences Significant Drop

Similarly, IRFC stock fell to a 52-week low of Rs 80.04 in the same session, reducing its market capitalization to Rs 1.04 lakh crore. The technical indicators for IRFC also paint a grim picture, with its RSI dropping to 25.3, firmly placing it in the oversold category. Like IRCTC, IRFC shares are trading below all key simple moving averages, reinforcing the prevailing downtrend.

Patel indicated that IRFC is also witnessing a range-bound structure, with strong support at Rs 76 and resistance at Rs 87. A decisive move above Rs 87 could lead to Rs 91. Conversely, a sustained breach below Rs 76 would weaken the current structure. Jagad's assessment for IRFC was equally cautious: "IRFC remains in a strong downtrend, trading below all major EMAs with weak RSI and continued lower high, lower-low formation. The major support has already been breached, indicating further downside risk. No recommendation to hold; existing positions can be exited."

Market Sentiment and Technical Indicators

The overall decline in railway stocks is attributed to investors booking profits and a general lack of favorable market cues, leading to a cooling period for the entire sector. Technical indicators such as the Relative Strength Index (RSI) and Simple Moving Averages (SMAs) are crucial tools for assessing stock health. An RSI below 30 typically suggests a stock is oversold, meaning it has more sellers than buyers and could potentially see a rebound, though this is not guaranteed. Trading below major moving averages often signifies a strong bearish momentum.
