Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the ambitious Ganga Expressway today, marking a significant milestone in Uttar Pradesh's infrastructure development. This 594-kilometer high-speed corridor aims to drastically improve connectivity and reduce travel time across the state.
Connecting Western and Eastern Uttar Pradesh
The Ganga Expressway stretches from Bijauli village in Meerut, located in western Uttar Pradesh, to Judapur Dandu village in Prayagraj, in the eastern part of the state. This uninterrupted route is poised to make long-distance travel smoother and considerably faster for commuters and transporters alike.
Upon its full operation, the journey between Meerut and Prayagraj, which currently takes an arduous 10 to 12 hours, is expected to be completed in approximately 6 to 7 hours. This reduction in travel duration is one of the project's most anticipated benefits.
Extensive Route and Coverage
Recognized as one of India's longest expressways, the Ganga Expressway traverses through 12 key districts of Uttar Pradesh. These include:
- Meerut
- Hapur
- Amroha
- Bulandshahr
- Badaun
- Shahjahanpur
- Farrukhabad
- Hardoi
- Kannauj
- Unnao
- Rae Bareli
- Pratapgarh
The project is also projected to enhance accessibility for residents in nearly 519 villages situated along its extensive route, fostering greater integration between urban and rural areas.
Design, Features, and Project Cost
The Ganga Expressway has been constructed as a modern six-lane, access-controlled highway. Its design incorporates provisions for future expansion to eight lanes, anticipating increased traffic volumes over time. State-of-the-art infrastructure, including multiple interchanges and major bridges, ensures seamless traffic flow. Vehicles on the expressway will be permitted to travel at a maximum speed of 120 kmph.
The total estimated cost for this monumental infrastructure project stands at approximately Rs 36,230 crore. Beyond merely facilitating faster travel, the Ganga Expressway is expected to catalyze economic activity, boost trade, and spur regional development across all connected districts of Uttar Pradesh, reinforcing the state's transport backbone.
