Asgarali Vohra, an 81-year-old man who once attended school with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has formally requested a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into a protracted land dispute in Maharashtra. Vohra claims that his property in Bhayandar East has been illegally seized by builders using fraudulent documents.
Allegations of Forgery and Official Collusion
Vohra met with PM Modi on September 8 to submit a letter detailing his grievances and seeking intervention. The dispute centers around approximately 2,810 square meters of land located on Navghar Road in Bhayandar East. Vohra states he legally purchased the property in 1989 through a registered agreement and has never sold or transferred its ownership.
He alleges that forged documents appeared in 2011, following which the land was illicitly divided into two parcels. One portion was reportedly shown under the possession of Swayam Builders, while the other was allegedly controlled by Seven Eleven Constructions, a firm Vohra links to local BJP MLA Narendra Mehta.
Questions Over Construction Permissions and Inaction
Adding to his claims, Vohra has questioned the legality of construction permissions granted on the disputed land. He asserts that the Town Planning Department of the Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation approved building activities despite his clear ownership claims. Furthermore, he accuses officials within the municipal corporation, the Revenue Department, and local police of failing to take action against those responsible for creating the alleged forged documents.
A Decade-Long Legal Battle and Delayed Reports
Vohra first approached the police regarding the alleged forgery in 2015, leading to the registration of an FIR. The case subsequently moved to court. However, Vohra expresses concern over the significant delay, noting that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) report in the matter was only submitted in 2026, nearly eleven years after the initial FIR. He suggests that political pressure may have contributed to this prolonged delay.
In a further complication, Vohra claims a counter-case was filed against him in 2025 without any prior notice or opportunity for him to present his defense.
PM's Intervention Sparks Action
After years of fruitless efforts with local police, revenue authorities, and the municipal corporation, Vohra escalated the issue directly to the Prime Minister. His meeting with PM Modi has reportedly prompted action, with municipal authorities now taking note of the matter. A hearing related to the dispute has been scheduled for September 16, offering a potential path forward in the long-running case.
