PM Modi Directs Ministers to Explore Alternative Energy Amid West Asia Crisis

· · 2 min read

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed ministers and officials to urgently explore alternative energy sources, including biogas, as the West Asia crisis disrupts India's fuel supplies and raises prices. This directive came during a recent Council of Ministers meeting.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged his ministers and government officials to prioritize the urgent exploration of alternative energy sources. The directive comes amidst the ongoing West Asia crisis, which has led to significant disruptions in India's fuel supplies from the Gulf region and a subsequent increase in domestic petrol and diesel prices.

Addressing India's Energy Security

During a comprehensive four-hour meeting of the Council of Ministers, PM Modi emphasized the critical need for India to shift away from conventional energy dependencies. He specifically suggested biogas as a viable substitute for LPG cooking gas, highlighting its potential to bolster energy self-reliance.

The energy situation was a central topic of discussion, with the Middle East crisis directly impacting Indian consumers. Reports indicate petrol and diesel prices have risen by approximately ₹3 per litre to help oil marketing companies offset their losses from supply chain issues caused by the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and regional conflicts.

Broader Reform Agenda and Diplomatic Efforts

Beyond energy, Modi also tasked ministers with vigorously implementing reforms, reiterating that the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision is a firm commitment. He stressed the importance of simplifying government operations and ensuring public interest remains at the core of all ministerial work.

The high-level meeting followed the Prime Minister's five-nation tour, which included a visit to the United Arab Emirates. During this visit, India and the UAE formalized an agreement for the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to enhance India’s petroleum reserves, alongside a separate agreement on LPG supply, demonstrating proactive diplomatic efforts to secure energy resources.

The Prime Minister has consistently advocated for reduced fuel consumption, encouraging citizens to adopt electric vehicles and public transportation. He has also advised curbing spending on gold and foreign travel to help preserve India’s foreign exchange reserves.

Several departments, including Agriculture, Forestry, Labour, Road Transport, Corporate Affairs, External Affairs, Commerce, and Power, presented their reports to the Council. Ministers were also instructed to effectively communicate the government’s 12-year journey, welfare initiatives, and reform agenda directly to the populace.
