PFRDA Delays Revised NPS Charges to Dec 1; PhonePe Launches Digital Account Opening

· · 3 min read

India's pension regulator, PFRDA, has deferred the implementation of revised NPS charges for Points of Presence to December 1, 2026. Separately, PhonePe introduced a new digital facility for opening National Pension System accounts using existing KYC, starting with a ₹250 contribution.

The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has announced a two-month deferral for the implementation of its revised charge structure for Points of Presence (PoPs) under the National Pension System (NPS) and NPS Lite. Originally set for October 1, the new effective date for these changes will now be December 1, 2026.

In a circular issued on October 26, the pension regulator instructed Central Recordkeeping Agencies (CRAs) to apply the updated charge structure from the revised date. The PFRDA clarified that this latest circular modifies only the implementation timeline, with all other provisions of its August 28 directive on the revised charges remaining unchanged.

Points of Presence are essential intermediaries within the NPS framework, responsible for providing various services to subscribers, including account opening and facilitating pension-related transactions. Central Recordkeeping Agencies, on the other hand, play a crucial role in maintaining subscriber records and overseeing the administration of NPS accounts.

PhonePe Simplifies NPS Account Opening with Digital Facility

In a separate development aimed at broadening access to retirement savings, PhonePe has introduced a new digital facility for opening National Pension System accounts directly through its mobile application. Dubbed 'Tatkal NPS', the initiative allows eligible users to establish an NPS account with an initial contribution as low as ₹250.

The facility leverages existing bank Know Your Customer (KYC) details and one-time password (OTP)-based authentication, significantly streamlining the onboarding process. This means users can open an NPS account without the need to upload fresh documents, making it more convenient and faster.

PhonePe has established partnerships with several banks to offer this service and plans to expand its coverage to include more banking institutions. To open an account, users can simply search for NPS within the PhonePe app, select the National Pension Scheme option, and choose a linked bank account. After verifying the account via an OTP, they can make their initial contribution using PhonePe UPI. This process generates a Permanent Retirement Account Number (PRAN), which serves as a unique identifier for their NPS account.

This initiative operates under the PFRDA's 'Tatkal NPS' framework, designed to enable subscribers to reuse their existing bank KYC details for account openings. The National Pension System is a government-regulated, defined-contribution retirement savings scheme where individuals contribute to build a retirement corpus. The eventual retirement benefits are dependent on the total contributions made, investment performance, and applicable withdrawal and annuity rules.

PhonePe stated that this move aims to make retirement savings more accessible, particularly for individuals without employer-linked pension benefits, such as gig workers, freelancers, and small business owners. While opening an account is the first step, consistent and regular contributions over time are crucial for building a substantial retirement corpus.
