Pahalgam Boosts Security with QR Code IDs for Thousands of Local Workers

· · 2 min read

Pahalgam authorities have implemented a QR code-based identification system for thousands of local workers, including pony handlers and taxi drivers, to enhance security. This initiative follows a terrorist attack and aims to improve monitoring and visitor safety in the popular tourist region.

Pahalgam, a prominent tourist destination, has introduced a new QR code-based identification system for its local workforce. This significant security upgrade comes in the wake of a terrorist attack that occurred in the region a year prior, which tragically claimed 26 lives, including a pony handler.

Enhanced Security for Pahalgam's Workforce

The local police have rolled out this mandatory system for thousands of individuals operating in the hill town. It targets various professions, including pony handlers, taxi drivers, and members of nomadic communities in the surrounding hills. Each worker is issued a unique QR code that, when scanned with applications like Google Lens, provides instant access to personal details such as name, address, phone number, Aadhaar information, PIN code, and profession.

Comprehensive Identification Drive

The identification drive aims to register approximately 25,000 individuals, with around 7,000 QR codes already distributed in Pahalgam. The process requires applicants to submit verification forms and undergo thorough police background checks. Even minor criminal records or First Information Reports (FIRs) can lead to disqualification from receiving a QR code, ensuring a stringent vetting process.

After police clearance, the QR identities are generated with the assistance of local Khidmat service centres, streamlining the implementation. This digital system replaces older physical identity cards, offering more reliable and instant verification capabilities.

Increased Safety at Vulnerable Points

Authorities have identified 17 to 18 vulnerable locations, including popular tourist spots, where the QR code system will be strictly enforced. This measure is designed to prevent unauthorized access and significantly improve visitor safety across the region. Verification checks can be performed by both security personnel and tourists, adding an extra layer of transparency and security.

Abdul Wahid Wani, president of the Pahalgam Local Pony Owners' Union, highlighted that post-attack investigations revealed gaps in the previous identification system, which directly led to the adoption of this advanced QR-based solution. Currently, Pahalgam has around 3,500 registered pony service providers from nine nearby villages, all of whom are now subject to the new identification protocols.
