Ola Electric Pivots to Dealer Partner Model for Nationwide EV Sales Growth

· · 3 min read

Ola Electric is abandoning its direct-to-consumer sales strategy, partnering with dealers across India. This structural shift aims to boost market penetration and accelerate EV adoption after the company slipped in sales rankings.

Bengaluru, India – Ola Electric, a prominent electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced a significant strategic shift, moving away from its direct-to-consumer (D2C) sales model to embrace a dealer partner network across India. This change, effective August 6, 2026, marks a pivotal moment for the company, five years after it launched its inaugural electric scooters.

Why the Shift to Dealer Partners?

For years, Ola Electric mirrored Tesla's D2C approach, operating its own retail stores. However, this strategy has seen the company fall to the fifth position in India's competitive electric two-wheeler market. Rivals like Ather Energy, TVS Motor Company, Bajaj Auto, and Hero MotoCorp have surpassed Ola in monthly sales volumes.

“Ola Electric built its early growth through company owned stores, using them to build EV awareness, establish the brand, and create India’s largest EV two-wheeler customer base of over 1 million riders. As the EV industry has matured and consumer acceptance has grown, the company is now evolving this model,” stated an Ola Electric representative.

The company acknowledges that a localized approach is crucial for broader market penetration as the EV industry matures. Founder Bhavish Aggarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Ola Electric, emphasized this point.

“This is a big shift in how we go to market, and one that reflects where the EV industry in India is headed,” said Aggarwal. “Now, as the category matures, our job is to bring EVs to every corner of the country, and dealer partners understand their local markets in ways no company owned network can replicate at that scale.”

New Strategy: Brand Experience & Local Sales

Under the new model, Ola Electric's existing company-owned stores will transition to focus primarily on brand and product experience. Dealer partners, conversely, will become the cornerstone for local sales, service, and scaling operations nationwide. This hybrid approach seeks to leverage both direct brand engagement and the extensive reach of traditional dealerships.

The company has engaged with dealers across the country, reporting a strong positive response. Partners expressed confidence that Ola’s product portfolio, combined with their local market expertise, will significantly accelerate both Ola's sales and overall EV adoption in India.

Benefits for Dealer Partners and Future Outlook

Ola Electric is offering its dealer partners a substantial recurring service opportunity from its existing base of over 1 million customers. The portfolio available to dealers will include scooters, motorcycles, and energy products like Ola Shakti, with more energy solutions planned for the future. The company has also designed a dealer economics model aimed at ensuring strong returns for its partners.

Ola Electric anticipates achieving meaningful on-ground scale from this new program by Diwali 2026. To support this critical transition, BVR Subbu, former President of Hyundai Motors India and a long-time mentor to Aggarwal, will rejoin Ola Electric as Senior Advisor.
