North India's Venue Industry Shifts to Design-Led Experiences

· · 3 min read

Faisal Shareef Khan, CEO of Studio 145, observes a major shift in North India's standalone venue industry. Venues are moving beyond basic real estate to focus on distinct design and curated experiences, driving premium value and investor interest.

India's standalone venue industry, particularly across North India, is undergoing a significant transformation, moving beyond its traditional real estate-centric model. Faisal Shareef Khan, Founder & CEO of Studio 145, a prominent wedding venue design studio, highlights how design and curated experiences are now paramount, reshaping how venues compete and create value.

From Real Estate to Experiential Design

For years, the industry operated primarily on a real estate paradigm, with developers focusing on building larger halls and investing in finishes, expecting demand to follow. Khan, with over fifteen years as a hospitality design consultant, notes that while capacity and pricing were once the main competitive factors, the focus has shifted dramatically. Today, venues with distinct identities and meticulously planned experiences are outperforming those that merely offer size.

Khan emphasizes that design is no longer an afterthought but a critical business decision. Elements such as arrival sequences, landscaping, lighting, and service planning all contribute to how customers perceive a venue's value. This comprehensive approach to design influences everything from initial choice to how guests remember and recommend the space.

"For years, standalone venues competed largely on capacity and pricing. Today, people remember the venue itself. That changes how families choose, how businesses position themselves and how value is created."

Commercial Impact and Investor Interest

Venues that embrace a clear design identity often command stronger pricing, secure repeat bookings, and build a reputation extending beyond paid marketing. Each event serves as a live demonstration, introducing the venue to hundreds of potential future clients, thereby building a referral-driven customer base and brand equity.

This evolution has not gone unnoticed by investors. Increasingly, individuals and firms without prior ties to the wedding or event sector are exploring banquet and event-focused developments. They recognize the unique combination of hospitality economics, recurring social demand, high-value transactions, and the potential for long-term brand building that standalone venues offer. Khan asserts that a successful venue is now as much a hospitality brand as it is a real estate asset.

Future Growth in Emerging Markets

While Delhi NCR has led much of this transformation, setting benchmarks for luxury banquet and destination celebration venue design, Khan sees the next phase of growth emerging in cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad. These markets possess growing affluence, expanding business communities, and significant wedding expenditure, coupled with consumers increasingly willing to invest in premium experiences.

However, the availability of purpose-built, destination-quality celebration venues in these areas remains comparatively limited. This gap presents a significant opportunity for developers willing to innovate beyond conventional banquet halls or hotel ballrooms, focusing on designing venues specifically around the experience of modern celebrations.

As customer expectations continue to rise and newer markets demand sophisticated celebration infrastructure, standalone venue brands are poised to become a closely watched segment within India's broader hospitality and real estate landscape. The future, according to Khan, belongs to those who create destinations people actively seek out.
