Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan confirmed the NEET-UG examination will transition to a Computer-Based Test (CBT) system starting in 2027. This significant shift marks the end of the traditional paper-based format, which has recently been embroiled in multiple leak controversies.
Re-examination Scheduled for June 21
This announcement coincides with a revised examination schedule. The National Testing Agency (NTA) has scheduled a re-examination for June 21, offering a fresh chance to over 2.2 million medical aspirants after the original May 3 exam was cancelled due to widespread paper leak allegations. Authorities have pledged significantly tighter security and improved transparency measures for the rescheduled test.
Government Acknowledges Lapses, Vows Action
Addressing the issue directly, Pradhan stated the May 3 exam cancellation was essential to safeguard student interests and combat the 'exam mafia.' He acknowledged a 'lapse' in the chain of command, despite implementing recommendations from the Radhakrishnan Committee. The Minister affirmed the government's commitment to rectifying the system and eradicating examination malpractices, urging public support from citizens, policymakers, and society for a clean and fair examination process going forward. He also appealed to students not to fall for circulating rumors.
CBI Investigation Underway
On the critical matter of accountability, Pradhan left no room for ambiguity. A detailed investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is underway, with Pradhan assuring strict action against all involved in the wrongdoing.
Shift to Computer-Based Testing
The push toward a Computer-Based Test format represents the most substantial structural response to emerge from the crisis. The transition to a CBT system is seen as a critical measure to prevent future breaches. This digital format aims to eliminate the vulnerabilities inherent in physical paper trails, which investigators suspect facilitated the 2026 leak from the Nashik printing press through its distribution across six states. The move is expected to fundamentally enhance the security and integrity of the NEET examination process if implemented as indicated from 2027.
