India's inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper train, operating between Howrah and Kamakhya, has quickly emerged as a top choice for passengers, recording exceptional occupancy rates since its launch. Data from January to July 2026 reveals that the train achieved an impressive 126% occupancy on its Howrah to Kamakhya journey (train number 27575), while the return leg from Kamakhya to Howrah (train number 27576) maintained a robust 103% occupancy.
This high demand underscores passengers' growing preference for improved connectivity and comfortable travel options, particularly between West Bengal and Assam. The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) confirmed the strong positive response from travelers.
Enhanced Connectivity and Features
The orange-and-grey Vande Bharat Sleeper train was officially flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 17, 2026, from Malda Town railway station in West Bengal. This semi-high-speed service has significantly reduced travel time between Howrah and Kamakhya by up to six hours, offering a faster alternative for commuters and tourists alike.
“The strong occupancy levels reflect the growing preference of passengers for improved connectivity, comfortable travel and enhanced passenger services,” stated Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR).
Developed by BEML, utilizing Integral Coach Factory (ICF) technology, the train is operated and maintained by the Northeast Frontier Railway zone. It boasts 16 coaches, including 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches, and one AC 1st class coach, providing a range of comfortable travel options.
Route and Schedule
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train makes 13 halts on its route between Howrah and Kamakhya, ensuring accessibility across key locations. These stations include Bandel, Nabadwip Dham, Katwa, Azimganj, New Farakka, Malda Town, Aluabari Road, New Jalpaiguri, Jalpaiguri Road, New Cooch Behar, New Alipurduar, New Bongaigaon, and Rangiya.
Timings:
- Train number 27575 (Howrah to Kamakhya): Departs Howrah at 18:20 hrs, arriving at Kamakhya at 08:20 hrs the following day.
- Train number 27576 (Kamakhya to Howrah): Departs Kamakhya at 18:15 hrs, arriving at Howrah at 08:15 hrs the next day.
