Milestone Achieved in Gujarat
Maruti Suzuki India's Hansalpur manufacturing facility in Gujarat has achieved a significant milestone, reaching an annual production capacity of one million units. This marks a first in Suzuki's global history for a single manufacturing plant and establishes Hansalpur as India's largest passenger vehicle manufacturing facility at a single location.
The expansion has boosted Maruti Suzuki's overall manufacturing capacity to 2.9 million units per annum. The achievement follows the commercial commencement of production at the facility's fourth plant, designated as Plant D, which added 250,000 units to the Hansalpur site's capacity.
Strategic Expansion and Investment
The cumulative investment in the Hansalpur facility now stands at an impressive ₹25,288.7 crore, with approximately ₹3,900 crore allocated specifically for Plant D. This new plant will initially focus on producing the company’s flagship Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the e-Vitara. This move is expected to significantly ramp up domestic volumes of Maruti Suzuki's maiden EV, which were previously constrained to around 2,000 units per month.
Beyond the e-Vitara, the Hansalpur facility is also responsible for manufacturing popular models such as the Fronx, Baleno, and Swift. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director & CEO, Maruti Suzuki, highlighted Gujarat's emergence as a crucial manufacturing and export hub for the company, attributing it to robust infrastructure and a progressive industrial ecosystem.
Driving Exports and Future Growth
The Hansalpur facility has become a cornerstone of Maruti Suzuki's export strategy, contributing nearly 47% of its total overseas shipments in the fiscal year 2025-26. Takeuchi emphasized that the new production line will strengthen the company's ability to meet escalating demand from both domestic and international customers, reinforcing its 'Make in India, Make for the World' vision and expanding its global footprint.
Looking ahead, the Hansalpur facility, in conjunction with the upcoming Sanand plant, is set to play a pivotal role in Maruti Suzuki's ambitious long-term goal of producing four million units annually in India. These projects underscore the company's commitment to enhancing India's manufacturing competitiveness, fostering employment, boosting exports, and contributing to the 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India) initiative.
Sustainable Logistics
In a move towards more sustainable logistics, Maruti Suzuki commissioned India’s first automobile in-plant railway siding at its Hansalpur facility in March 2024, under the Prime Minister’s GatiShakti programme. Since the commencement of dispatches in March 2023, the company has cumulatively transported over 750,000 vehicles by rail. This initiative has substantially reduced CO2 emissions, decreased fuel consumption in vehicle transportation, and alleviated overall road congestion.
