Maruti Suzuki WagonR Set to Launch as India's First Flex-Fuel Car in June

· · 2 min read

Maruti Suzuki India is preparing to launch the WagonR as the country's first flex-fuel vehicle in June. It is expected to operate on E85 fuel, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% petrol, with its pure ethanol (E100) compatibility yet to be confirmed.

Maruti Suzuki Pioneers Flex-Fuel Technology in India

Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. is set to introduce a flex-fuel variant of its popular WagonR model in June, marking it as India's inaugural flex-fuel car. This development follows an announcement from a senior company official to newswire The Informist. The flex-fuel WagonR is anticipated to run primarily on E85, a fuel composition comprising 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. However, its capability to utilize pure ethanol (E100) remains unconfirmed at this stage.

Government Push for Ethanol Adoption

This launch aligns with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' decision in April to incorporate E100 (pure ethanol) into automobile testing and certification standards. This regulatory update paves the way for the broader rollout of pure ethanol-compatible vehicles across the nation. Beyond this, the government is actively exploring increased mandatory ethanol blending levels in petrol, potentially escalating from the current E20 benchmark to E21, E22, and eventually E25.

Challenges and Long-Term Vision

Rahul Bharti, Senior Executive Officer for Corporate Affairs at Maruti Suzuki, acknowledged the company's technological readiness for both increased ethanol blending and flex-fuel vehicles. However, he cautioned that flex-fuel vehicles are unlikely to achieve significant sales volumes immediately. Bharti highlighted several hurdles, including the limited availability of such models, the need for a widespread network of dispensing pumps, and achieving price parity between ethanol and petrol.

“The volumes will be minimal at this stage. It will grow, say, 5 years to 10 years from now, it will become a meaningful volume, nothing immediately,” Bharti explained during an analyst call. Industry executives estimate that upgrading vehicles for higher ethanol blends could incur an additional cost of approximately Rs 40,000-50,000 per vehicle.

Market Landscape and Future Implications

While numerous flex-fuel car prototypes were showcased at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025, Maruti Suzuki's WagonR will be the first commercially launched car in this segment. Currently, only a few Japanese automakers, such as Suzuki and Honda, offer flex-fuel motorcycles in India. The proposed increase in ethanol blending levels would impact a vast segment of the Indian automotive market, encompassing around 5 million annual passenger vehicle sales and the existing fleet of cars on the road.
