Pharmaceutical giant Mankind Pharma has awarded ₹1 crore to Flydubai Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery. Machchhar was stabbed by his co-pilot mid-flight but managed to save 174 lives by making an emergency landing.

Pharmaceutical major Mankind Pharma has honored Captain Smit Machchhar with a ₹1 crore contribution for his exceptional courage during a mid-air emergency on a Flydubai flight. The company recognized Machchhar's composure and responsibility in a moment of extreme crisis that saved 174 lives.

Mid-Air Attack and Heroic Response

Captain Machchhar was piloting Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv when he was stabbed and seriously injured by his co-pilot on Wednesday. The co-pilot allegedly attempted to crash the aircraft, prompting Machchhar to fight back and open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to subdue the attacker. Despite his injuries, Captain Machchhar successfully executed an emergency landing in Tabuk, north-west Saudi Arabia.

The flight, carrying 174 people, including 27 children, transmitted emergency signals and rapidly descended more than 17,000 feet from its cruising altitude of 34,000 feet before diverting to Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Airport.

Mankind Pharma's Gesture of Gratitude

Rajeev Juneja, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Mankind Pharma, expressed immense pride in Captain Machchhar's bravery. In a letter, he stated, "A leader is not tested when everything is going well. The real test comes in a moment of extreme crisis, when fear is natural, pressure is immense, and the lives of so many people depend on your decisions." The ₹1 crore contribution was described as a "humble gesture of gratitude" to the pilot and his family, recognizing his leadership in prioritizing the lives of his crew and passengers.

Widespread Recognition for Captain Machchhar

Captain Smit Machchhar has received widespread praise for his actions. The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) has formally requested the Prime Minister's Office to consider him for a national bravery award or civilian recognition, emphasizing that such an honor would acknowledge India's value for courage and professional responsibility in aviation.

The Consulate General of Israel in Mumbai also publicly lauded Machchhar, erecting billboards with messages like "Thank you Captain Smit for saving lives." Yaniv Revach, Israel Consul General in Mumbai, posted on X, "India has a new hero, and Israel will never forget his name: Captain Smit Machchhar!"

On Friday, Captain Machchhar spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recounting his determination to save others despite fighting for his own life. He is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in the UAE and has also been hailed as a "true hero" by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Co-Pilot Identified, Security Concerns Raised

A Wall Street Journal report identified the co-pilot as Hamam al-Hammami, an Omani citizen. Reportedly, al-Hammami had previously been barred from flying by Omani authorities due to his radical ideological views, raising questions about security protocols. He was taken into custody by authorities in Tabuk following the emergency landing.
