LPG, CNG, PNG Prices Unchanged July 17 Amid Hormuz Tensions; City Rates Listed

· · 2 min read

Domestic LPG, CNG, and PNG prices remain stable across major Indian cities on July 17. However, rising US-Iran conflict and concerns over energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz are fueling uncertainty.

As of July 17, 2026, the prices for 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinders, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) have held steady across India for over a month. This stability comes despite increasing global concerns over energy supplies, particularly stemming from escalating tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Global Energy Concerns Mount Amid Geopolitical Tensions

The ongoing US-Iran conflict has intensified fears regarding the security of energy shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol has warned of a potential energy crisis if oil movement through the Strait does not normalize soon.

Reports indicate a significant reduction in vessel crossings through the Strait of Hormuz due to deteriorating regional security and recent military actions involving the US and Iran. This geopolitical instability has already impacted global oil markets, with Brent crude futures and US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures seeing their fourth consecutive day of price increases, nearing one-month highs.

While US President Donald Trump and the White House have reiterated that the Strait remains open for commercial traffic, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has stated it will remain closed until what it terms "America's evil deeds" cease. The US has also imposed renewed naval blockades and sanctions on Iranian ports and shipping networks.

Broader Impact on Global Economies

IEA chief Birol also highlighted the widespread impact of the supply crisis on economies globally, particularly in Asia, which heavily relies on energy from the Strait of Hormuz. While developed nations like Japan and South Korea are affected, developing countries such as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India have suffered the most.

Birol further pointed to potential health risks in developing countries, noting a shift among many households to alternative cooking fuels like dung and wood due to the unaffordability of petroleum products. These traditional fuels produce higher levels of hazardous emissions, posing a significant public health concern, especially for women.
