LinkedIn, the global professional networking giant, will maintain its core focus on career development and economic opportunity, firmly rejecting any move towards integrating dating features. This clarification comes from Kumaresh Pattabiraman, LinkedIn India Country Manager and Product Head, who addressed the topic at the Business Today India@100 event.
No Plans for Dating, Despite User Trends
Pattabiraman acknowledged a recent Wall Street Journal report highlighting a trend where some users attempt to use LinkedIn for romantic connections, despite the platform's rules. He also revealed that the idea of adding dating features has been pitched internally by employees during "hack day prototypes" on multiple occasions.
"It's funny, every other year I have someone on the team pitch this as an idea," Pattabiraman said, underscoring the recurring nature of the suggestion.
However, he stressed that the platform's fundamental purpose remains unchanged.
Prioritizing Trust and Economic Opportunity
The decision to keep LinkedIn strictly professional is rooted in its commitment to fostering economic opportunities. Pattabiraman emphasized the importance of maintaining a trusted environment, particularly for women, where they can confidently pursue professional growth and connections without unintended romantic overtures.
"At our core, again, it comes back to economic opportunity," Pattabiraman stated, clarifying that the intent behind connections made on LinkedIn must always be clear and professional. "That’s why we will continue to remain a community of professionals that's in pursuit of economic opportunity."
This stance reinforces LinkedIn's dedication to its founding mission, ensuring it remains a premier destination for career advancement, skill development, and professional networking in India and globally.
