Kolkata Eyes Electricity Bill Relief Under New BJP Government

· · 2 min read

The newly elected BJP government in West Bengal is considering a revision in electricity prices for Kolkata residents. This follows an election pledge to reduce household bills to zero for consumers using up to 200 units per month.

Kolkata residents could soon see significant relief on their electricity bills as the new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in West Bengal, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, is actively discussing tariff revisions. This move aligns with a key promise made in the party's election manifesto: to provide zero-cost electricity for households consuming up to 200 units per month.

According to a senior Bengal BJP official, discussions are underway to implement these tariff reductions, with an announcement expected soon. This initiative is linked to the broader PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, aiming to deliver direct financial benefits to common citizens struggling with high utility costs.

High Electricity Tariffs in Kolkata

Electricity services in Kolkata and parts of adjacent districts, covering a 567-square-kilometre area, are primarily provided by CESC Limited. The city faces some of the highest urban electricity tariffs in India. While the initial slab for the first 25 units is relatively low at ₹5.18 per unit, rates escalate sharply, reaching ₹9.21 per unit for consumption exceeding 300 units.

Kolkata's average domestic billing rate, typically between ₹7 and ₹8 per unit, places West Bengal among the states with the highest electricity costs, comparable to Maharashtra, which sees residential rates peak above ₹12 per unit in higher consumption tiers. In contrast, cities like Delhi offer subsidies for usage up to 200 units, and states like Gujarat maintain average rates around ₹5.20 to ₹5.45 per unit, highlighting the significant burden on CESC consumers.

State-Wide Distribution and Future Plans

Beyond CESC's service area, the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) caters to the rest of the state. Both CESC and WBSEDCL consistently rank among the top three to four most expensive electricity providers nationally, alongside utilities in Maharashtra and Kerala.

The new BJP government, which assumed power on May 4, ending a 15-year rule by the Trinamool Congress, has also announced other welfare schemes. These include the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, offering ₹5 lakh health coverage to the poorest families, and the Annapurna Bhandar scheme, promising ₹3,000 per month directly to eligible women starting June 1, 2026. However, the immediate focus remains on addressing the pressing issue of high electricity prices to provide much-needed relief to Kolkata's households.
