BENGALURU, KARNATAKA – Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has issued a stern warning to private companies in Bengaluru, particularly within the booming IT sector, regarding alleged discrimination against Kannadiga job applicants. The Chief Minister stated that his government takes complaints of native Kannada speakers being sidelined very seriously and will not tolerate any disregard for their rights or employment opportunities.
Speaking on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Shivakumar emphasized that the government is committed to protecting the interests of Kannadigas. "It is disheartening to hear complaints that Kannadigas are being denied job opportunities in Bengaluru's IT companies," he posted on X. "The government will not allow the rights, dignity, and opportunities of Kannadigas to be disregarded for any reason."
Allegations Trigger Government Scrutiny
The Chief Minister's strong statement follows the circulation of a video on social media where a woman claimed that some Bengaluru IT firms were actively discriminating against Kannada-speaking candidates. According to local media reports, the woman alleged that resumes mentioning Kannada language skills were being rejected, and some companies preferred to recruit applicants from other states, often at lower salaries, instead of conducting local campus recruitment drives.
These allegations, while not yet independently verified, have prompted the state government to signal a readiness to intervene. Shivakumar reiterated, "If it is found that any private institution has deliberately sidelined Kannadigas, the government will take appropriate action." He did not specify the exact nature of the actions that would be taken.
Bengaluru's Tech Hub Status and Local Talent
Bengaluru is widely recognized as India's technology capital, hosting a vast ecosystem of software companies, multinational technology firms, startups, and global capability centers (GCCs). Reports indicate the city accounts for a significant portion of India's IT job postings and GCC presence.
Chief Minister Shivakumar highlighted the pride the state takes in its local talent. "The world sees Bengaluru as India's technology capital, and we take immense pride in the talent, skills, and capabilities of our Kannadigas," he said, underscoring the contribution of local professionals to the city's growth. The government's stance underscores a commitment to ensure that this growth benefits the local populace.
