K. Annamalai Likely to Quit BJP After Declining Rajya Sabha Seat Offer

· · 2 min read

K. Annamalai, former Tamil Nadu BJP chief, is reportedly set to leave the party after declining a Rajya Sabha seat. Sources indicate he sees limited future opportunities within the BJP and may launch a public movement.

K. Annamalai, former chief of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu, is reportedly preparing to resign from the party. This follows his alleged refusal of a Rajya Sabha seat offer, with sources indicating he perceives limited future prospects within the BJP. He is expected to meet with party president Nitin Nabin today, according to NDTV.

Annamalai's Rise and Internal Conflicts

Annamalai, a former Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, joined the BJP in 2020. His rise within the party was swift, becoming state vice-president shortly after joining and ascending to Tamil Nadu BJP President within a year, succeeding L. Murugan.

As state chief, Annamalai became a prominent face for the BJP in Tamil Nadu, a state historically dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. His efforts through grassroots outreach, aggressive campaigns, and social media significantly boosted the party's visibility.

However, internal disagreements reportedly emerged regarding the BJP's strategy for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election. Annamalai advocated for the BJP to contest independently, believing the party had gained sufficient traction. The national leadership, however, chose to revive its alliance with the AIADMK to consolidate opposition votes against the ruling DMK.

This alliance realignment coincided with a change in the state unit's leadership. Reports suggest AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami sought alterations in the state leadership, leading to Annamalai's replacement as state president. He neither participated in the elections as a candidate nor played a significant role in the BJP's campaign. The BJP ultimately secured only one seat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election.

Future Political Aspirations

Looking ahead, Annamalai is reportedly planning to launch a public movement. This initiative aims to unite like-minded individuals and build a broad volunteer network across various backgrounds, potentially paving the way for a new political party later. When questioned about forming a new party, he stated, "Please wait. We will sit down and talk in two days."
