JSW MG Motor India is set to revolutionize its product lineup with a significant investment of Rs 1,400 crore during the current financial year. This capital infusion will primarily fund new product introductions, expand manufacturing capacity, and boost the localization of its Windsor EV components from under 50% to an ambitious 70% by next year.
MG Adapt Platform to Drive Future Mobility
A cornerstone of this strategic push is the unveiling of the new MG Adapt platform. This innovative multi-powertrain architecture is designed to accommodate a diverse range of vehicles, including fully electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid models, plug-in hybrids, and range extender electric vehicles. According to JSW MG Motor India managing director Anurag Mehrotra, consolidating multiple powertrain technologies onto a single platform significantly reduces capital expenditure, effectively halving the investment needed compared to developing separate platforms.
The company has confirmed plans to launch two new products based on the MG Adapt platform this year. The first will be an electric vehicle, swiftly followed by a plug-in hybrid model, marking a robust expansion of their new energy vehicle portfolio.
Production Boost and Premium Offerings
Beyond new models, JSW MG Motor India is also scaling up its manufacturing capabilities. Production capacity at its Gujarat plant is slated to increase from 120,000 units to 160,000 units annually by March 2027. Additionally, a new vehicle under the premium channel, MG Select, is also anticipated to launch this year, catering to a more discerning market segment.
Surging Demand for New Energy Vehicles
The company notes a significant uptick in demand for new energy vehicles, a category encompassing both EVs and hybrids. Mehrotra highlighted that electric car penetration reached 8% in June, with projections indicating it will touch double-digit figures by the end of the calendar year. Interestingly, 50% of MG's EV sales are originating from outside Tier 1 cities, with Tier 3 and Tier 4 markets exhibiting a notably higher growth rate compared to their metropolitan counterparts, underscoring a broadening adoption of electric mobility across India.
