India Welcomes First Mass-Market PHEV SUV
JSW MG Motor India, a prominent player in the country's electric vehicle market, is gearing up to introduce a groundbreaking plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) on July 16. This launch is poised to mark a significant milestone, bringing PHEV technology to India's mainstream mass-market passenger vehicle segment for the very first time. Currently, plug-in hybrids are primarily offered by luxury German automakers, making JSW MG Motor's entry a notable expansion of accessible green mobility.
The Wuling Starlight 560's Indian Avatar
The upcoming PHEV SUV is widely anticipated to be a badge-engineered version of the Wuling Starlight 560 SUV. The design for the Wuling Starlight 560 was patented in India in March, with SAIC GM Wuling Automobile Company Limited listed as the applicant. SAIC Motor, a Chinese automotive giant, holds a 49% stake in JSW MG Motor India, while the JSW Group owns 35%. The vehicle's design closely mirrors models already available in international markets and has been spotted undergoing road tests across India. It is expected to be strategically positioned within MG's SUV lineup, slotting between the mid-size MG Hector and the recently launched MG Majestor.
Power and Performance
In global markets, the Starlight 560 is offered with both plug-in hybrid and fully electric powertrain options. The PHEV variant, which is the focus of this launch, features a robust 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 104 bhp. This engine is paired with a 20.5 kWh battery pack, delivering a combined output of 194 bhp and 230 Nm of torque. A key highlight of this configuration is its impressive claimed all-electric driving range of up to 125 km on a single charge, offering substantial fuel savings for daily commutes.
While the immediate launch focuses on the PHEV, it's worth noting that the Starlight 560 also has an all-electric model. This EV variant is equipped with a 56.7 kWh battery pack, powering a front-mounted electric motor that generates 134 bhp and 200 Nm of torque, with a claimed driving range of up to 500 km on the CLTC test cycle.
Driving JSW MG Motor's Growth
The introduction of a plug-in hybrid vehicle aligns perfectly with JSW MG Motor's strategic emphasis on new energy vehicles. The company has seen significant growth driven by its electric vehicle sales, which accounted for over 75% of its total sales in June 2026. This focus on electrification contributed to JSW MG Motor India recording its highest-ever wholesales of 7,568 units in June, marking a substantial 30% year-on-year growth compared to the same month last year. The company attributes this accelerated customer preference for electric mobility to factors such as rising fuel prices, lower EV running costs, and geopolitical uncertainties.
