Noida's bustling Sector 1 Golchakkar is finally getting a much-needed pedestrian skywalk, with construction slated to commence within the next month. This L-shaped structure is designed to connect the Golchakkar with Udyog Marg, promising to significantly reduce traffic congestion caused by the area's heavy pedestrian flow.
Project Details and Scope
Officials from the Noida Authority confirmed that the skywalk will span 121 meters in length and be 2.5 meters wide. Once work begins, the ambitious project is anticipated to be completed within approximately one year, offering a vital infrastructure upgrade to the region.
The skywalk will feature multiple access points for pedestrian convenience, including connections towards the Sector 15 Metro Station, the local coaching center area, and Sector 14. To facilitate easy access, two escalators and a lift will be installed. The lift will specifically serve Udyog Marg, near the Sector 1 Indian Oil building.
Funding and Implementation Model
The project, estimated to cost around ₹15 crore, will be developed under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. This means the Noida Authority will not directly bear the construction expenses. Instead, a selected agency will finance the entire project. In return, this agency will be granted advertising rights on the skywalk and will also be responsible for its maintenance for a period of approximately 15 years.
Addressing Long-Standing Delays
The skywalk project has been on the drawing board for over a decade, facing numerous delays primarily due to land disputes and other logistical challenges. The recent selection of an agency has now cleared the path for construction to finally get underway. Survey and marking work at the site, which includes finalizing pillar locations and identifying potential obstacles like trees, electricity poles, and a police booth, is expected to start within a week.
The primary motivation behind this project is to mitigate the severe pedestrian movement at the busy intersection, which frequently disrupts vehicular traffic and poses safety risks to commuters. The new skywalk is expected to provide a safe and efficient passage for thousands of daily pedestrians.
