Jefferies Financial Group CEO Rich Handler is currently visiting India to spearhead a significant expansion of the Wall Street investment bank's operations in the country. This strategic visit, Handler's first since 2024, aims to capitalize on India's burgeoning investment and financing opportunities, positioning it as one of Jefferies' fastest-growing markets globally.
Key Expansion Initiatives in India
Among the primary objectives under consideration during Handler's trip are a major hiring drive, the establishment of an asset management company, and a substantial strengthening of Jefferies' private credit business. These moves are designed to tap into India's robust economic growth and increasing demand for diverse financial services.
Entering India's $900 Billion Asset Management Sector
Jefferies is preparing to make its foray into India's formidable $900 billion asset management industry. This strategic entry comes at a time when domestic household investments are driving strong inflows into the sector, presenting a lucrative opportunity for global financial institutions. The firm aims to leverage this momentum to build a significant presence in the Indian asset management landscape.
Bolstering Private Credit Operations
In addition to asset management, Jefferies is focused on expanding its private credit operations in India. The demand for alternative financing solutions has been on the rise, and Jefferies seeks to reinforce its position in this segment. The firm had previously hired a key banker from Japan's Mizuho Financial Group a year ago to lead its private credit advisory services in the country, underscoring its commitment to this area.
Jefferies' Long-Standing Presence and Future Growth
Jefferies has maintained a presence in India for nearly two decades, with its local entity, Jefferies India Pvt Ltd, commencing operations in 2007. Currently, the firm employs approximately 150 professionals across various divisions, including investment banking, fixed income, equities, and existing asset management advisory. The planned expansion reflects a broader trend of increasing interest among global financial institutions in India, where large conglomerates are actively investing both domestically and internationally, creating a rich environment for investment banking, financing, and asset management services.
During his visit, CEO Handler also engaged with executives from some of Jefferies' most significant clients, reinforcing relationships and exploring collaborative opportunities within the dynamic Indian market.
