The Income Tax Department has officially released the Excel utility for filing Income Tax Return (ITR-5) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27. This development allows a specific category of taxpayers to prepare their income tax returns offline, offering flexibility and convenience.
This release follows the earlier availability of Excel utilities for ITR-1 and ITR-4, as well as the online filing facilities for ITR-2 and ITR-3. The ITR-5 utility is now accessible for download from the official Income Tax e-Filing portal, marking another step in the department's phased rollout of filing tools for the current assessment year.
Who is Eligible to File ITR-5?
ITR-5 is specifically designed for non-individual taxpayers who do not fall under the categories of individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), or companies. The entities eligible to file their returns using ITR-5 include:
- Firms
- Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
- Associations of Persons (AOPs)
- Bodies of Individuals (BOIs)
- Artificial Juridical Persons (AJPs)
- Local authorities
- Representative assessees as per Section 160(1)(iii) or (iv)
- Cooperative societies
- Societies registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, or equivalent state laws
- Trusts not required to file ITR-7
- Estates of deceased or insolvent persons
- Business trusts covered under Section 139(4E)
- Investment funds covered under Section 139(4F)
Who Cannot Use ITR-5?
Conversely, certain taxpayer categories are not permitted to use the ITR-5 form. These include:
- Individual taxpayers
- Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
- Companies
- Taxpayers who are mandated to file returns using ITR-7 under Sections 139(4A), 139(4B), 139(4C), 139(4D), 139(4E), or 139(4F).
The Offline Filing Process
The Excel utility facilitates the preparation of income tax returns without an active internet connection. Taxpayers can follow these steps:
- Download the ITR-5 Excel utility from the 'Downloads' section of the Income Tax e-Filing portal.
- Extract the downloaded ZIP file and open the Excel utility.
- Import pre-filled data, which includes personal details and tax information, previously downloaded from the e-Filing portal.
- Complete the remaining necessary schedules and information within the utility.
- Validate the filled-in return to ensure accuracy.
- Generate a JSON file, which can then be uploaded to the e-Filing portal online.
The utility supports editing profile details other than the Permanent Account Number (PAN). Any changes related to PAN information must first be updated on the e-Filing portal, followed by generating a fresh pre-filled JSON file.
Updates to Common Offline Utility
In a related development, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has also made available Version 1.2.1 of the Common Offline Utility for ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, and ITR-4 for Windows operating systems. The first version of the Mac utility has also been released. This common utility, built on JSON technology, similarly allows taxpayers to import pre-filled data, validate returns, and generate JSON files for online submission. Future updates are expected to introduce features such as direct tax payment through the utility and a questionnaire to assist users in selecting the correct ITR form.
With the release of the ITR-5 Excel utility, most major income tax return forms for AY 2026-27 are now accessible, empowering eligible taxpayers to commence their filing process well in advance of the stipulated due dates.
