Shares of Indian Railway Finance Corporation Ltd (IRFC) experienced a 2% decline in Tuesday's trading, even as the Navratna CPSE announced a significant financial agreement. IRFC signed a ₹4,200 crore term loan with Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) to fund renewable energy initiatives across Jharkhand and West Bengal.
This substantial financing is earmarked to bolster DVC's clean energy portfolio, encompassing various projects such as floating solar, ground-mounted solar, and rooftop solar installations, alongside Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) developments. These projects will strategically utilize DVC's existing land, reservoir infrastructure, and transmission networks.
Despite the positive news of the loan agreement, IRFC shares fell by 1.85% during Tuesday's session, reaching a low of ₹77.10, down from the previous close of ₹78.55. The stock opened at ₹78.58 and briefly touched a high of ₹79 before retreating.
The agreement was formally signed in New Delhi, with key officials from both organizations present. Notable attendees included Manish Kumar, Member (Finance) for DVC, and Manoj Kumar Dubey, Chairman and Managing Director of IRFC.
IRFC stated that this transaction signifies a strategic expansion of its long-term financing capabilities into the clean energy sector. While diversifying, the company emphasized its continued connection to the broader railway ecosystem. IRFC views this financing as a calculated move into strategic infrastructure segments that complement its core business mandate.
Commenting on the agreement, Manoj Kumar Dubey highlighted, "Renewable energy is no longer peripheral to the Railways; it is at the core of Indian Railways' journey towards Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2030."
Dubey further added that the ₹4,200 crore financing underscores IRFC's capacity to extend its long-term financial support to critical clean energy infrastructure, which is vital for India's future energy requirements. The company reiterated that the deal would also support DVC's renewable energy goals, contributing significantly to a more sustainable energy ecosystem nationwide. This move aligns with IRFC's strategy to expand beyond traditional railway financing into complementary infrastructure segments, leveraging its expertise in long-term funding.
