· · 2 min read

Indian passenger vehicle sales reached a record 4.37 lakh units in April, marking a 25.5% year-on-year increase. This surge contributes to a record 47 lakh units sold in the fiscal year 2025-26, according to SIAM data.

India's automotive sector witnessed a robust start to the new fiscal year, with passenger vehicle sales hitting an all-time high of 4.37 lakh units in April 2026. This significant achievement represents a substantial 25.5% growth compared to April 2025, underscoring strong consumer demand across the nation.

Fiscal Year 2025-26 Sees Overall Growth

The record-breaking monthly performance follows an impressive fiscal year. For the full financial year 2025-26, India's passenger vehicle sales grew by 8% year-on-year, reaching a record 47 lakh units, up from 43 lakh units in the preceding fiscal year. This sustained upward trend highlights the resilience and expansion of the Indian automotive market.

Two and Three-Wheelers Also Report Record Sales

Beyond passenger vehicles, other segments of the auto industry also demonstrated remarkable growth in April 2026. Three-wheeler sales recorded their highest-ever figures, with 0.66 lakh units sold, reflecting a 32.8% increase over the same period last year. Similarly, the two-wheeler segment saw a record 18.73 lakh units sold, marking a 28.4% growth compared to April 2025.

Industry Leaders Express Optimism Amid Challenges

Rajesh Menon, Director General of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), commented on the strong performance. He noted, “Continuing with the momentum of the second half of FY 2025-26, the first month of FY 2026-27, posted high double-digit growth in passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and two-wheelers.” Menon acknowledged concerns regarding elevated commodity prices stemming from disruptions in West Asia but affirmed that the industry continues to experience healthy demand.

Segment-Specific Performance

A closer look at specific vehicle categories reveals varied trends. Small cars, including popular models like Maruti Suzuki’s Alto and SPresso, saw a significant leap in sales, climbing from 6,332 units in April 2025 to 16,066 units in April 2026. Utility vehicles, encompassing multi-purpose vehicles, also enjoyed robust sales during the month. In contrast, the mid-size sedan segment experienced a decline, with sales falling from 3,337 units in April last year to 2,205 units in April 2026.
