India's Manufacturing Sector Surges, Boosting Jobs and Wages Across States

· · 2 min read

India's manufacturing sector is experiencing a significant expansion, driving job creation and higher wages across the country. Industrial output grew 8% year-on-year in August 2026, with factory investment also on the rise.

India's manufacturing sector is demonstrating a robust, broad-based expansion, with growth extending beyond industrial output to significant increases in employment and worker earnings. The latest Monthly Economic Review for October 2026 highlights this positive trend, pointing to a period of sustained economic momentum.

Key Growth Indicators

Several key metrics underscore the sector's strong performance. The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) saw an 8% year-on-year increase in August 2026, primarily driven by a 9% growth within manufacturing. Concurrently, the Index of Core Industries expanded by 7.9% in September. Further signaling accelerated growth, the HSBC India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) climbed to 55.1 from 52.8 in August.

The Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) for 2024-25 also reported widespread growth across registered manufacturing entities. Gross value added (GVA) increased by 9.59% over the previous year, fixed capital rose by 10.54%, and the total number of persons engaged in the sector grew by 7.19%.

Significant Job Creation and Wage Increases

Employment gains have been particularly notable over the past four years. Organised manufacturing employment surged by 30%, increasing from 1.6 crore in FY21 to 2.1 crore in FY25. This period also saw a substantial rise in worker earnings, with wages paid to workers climbing by 71% and total emoluments increasing by 66%.

Worker productivity has also improved, with net value added per worker growing by 30% between FY21 and FY25. Wages per worker kept pace, rising by 29%, indicating that compensation growth is broadly aligned with productivity enhancements.

Regional Distribution and Support Initiatives

While the expansion is widespread, its benefits have not been uniformly distributed. Five states collectively accounted for approximately 56% of manufacturing employment in FY25, and nearly 64% of the employment increase since FY21. Tamil Nadu led these states, contributing about 15% of the total manufacturing employment. Notably, Maharashtra added 7.9 lakh jobs, and Uttar Pradesh contributed 6.9 lakh jobs during this period.

The government is actively supporting this growth through various financing and policy initiatives. Bank credit to the industry sector rose by 18.2% year-on-year. Furthermore, a ₹10,000-crore SME Growth Fund has been approved, primarily to provide equity capital for manufacturing-focused small and medium enterprises. This fund aims to facilitate capacity expansion, technology adoption, and integration into global value chains.

Future Investment Outlook

Private investment intentions signal continued momentum for the sector. Estimates project private corporate capital expenditure to reach ₹3.2 lakh crore in FY27, a significant increase from ₹2.6 lakh crore in FY26, suggesting a confident outlook for sustained growth and expansion.
