India's Digital Backbone Shifts Focus to AI, Semiconductors, and Cybersecurity

At the Business Today Infrastructure Summit 2026, industry leaders declared India's digital infrastructure is entering a new phase. Focus is now on AI-ready networks, indigenous semiconductor manufacturing, and robust cybersecurity to support national economic growth.

India's digital infrastructure is moving beyond basic connectivity, with a new strategic focus on artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductor manufacturing, and cybersecurity. This shift was a central theme at the Business Today Infrastructure Summit 2026, where industry leaders outlined the country's next phase of digital evolution.

During a panel discussion titled 'Building India's Digital Backbone', experts highlighted the need for resilient, intelligent, and secure digital systems to power the nation's long-term economic ambitions, including the 'Viksit Bharat' vision. Panelists included Anku Jain, Managing Director of MediaTek India; Samar Mittal, India Country Business Leader for Nokia; and Vinayak Godse, CEO of the Data Security Council of India (DSCI).

The discussion acknowledged India's strong digital foundation, built on initiatives like Aadhaar, UPI, and a nationwide 5G rollout. However, the next phase demands significant investments in indigenous semiconductor capabilities, AI-ready networks, and comprehensive cybersecurity measures.

Boosting Indigenous Semiconductor Manufacturing

Anku Jain of MediaTek India emphasized the importance of the recently announced India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0. This initiative aims to develop a domestic semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem that encompasses not just chip fabrication but also packaging, chemicals, and other vital components of the value chain. Jain noted that India already contributes nearly 20% of the global talent pool for fabless chip design, but sustained investment, skilled talent, and a mature venture capital ecosystem are crucial for manufacturing growth.

AI-Ready Networks and Connected Intelligence

Samar Mittal from Nokia discussed India's remarkable progress in connectivity, now transitioning to an era where networks will connect intelligence rather than solely people. Mittal stressed that as AI becomes integral to daily life, India's infrastructure must be resilient, secure, and prepared for this new technological landscape. He added that India's engineering talent, digital public infrastructure, and manufacturing capabilities are attracting global investments, positioning the country as a strategic hub for AI-led research, innovation, and exports.

Cybersecurity and Trust as Foundational Pillars

Vinayak Godse, CEO of DSCI, underscored India's leadership in Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI). He articulated that the country's continued digital growth hinges on addressing challenges related to trusted data sharing, developing affordable AI models, and bolstering cybersecurity. Godse highlighted that user trust is paramount, stating, "The biggest requirement is that people should be able to use digital services without fear—without worrying about privacy being compromised or falling victim to cybercrime. Trust will determine the next phase of India's digital economy."

The panelists collectively agreed that digital infrastructure is becoming as critical as physical infrastructure in India's pursuit of its 'Viksit Bharat' vision. Strategic investments in semiconductor manufacturing, AI-ready networks, talent development, and robust cybersecurity will be key determinants of India's digital economy scalability over the coming decade.
