A recent IDP Education report highlights this shift, indicating that securing career outcomes post-graduation is the paramount factor, with 41% of Indian students ranking it as crucial.
Career Outcomes Drive Decisions
The emphasis on career outcomes far surpasses other considerations such as teaching quality (31%) and industry-aligned skills (27%) for Indian students. This trend reflects a global pattern, though at higher intensity for Indian aspirants. Students are increasingly looking beyond the brand value of a foreign degree, questioning whether a course will genuinely lead to stronger career prospects, valuable international exposure, and improved long-term earnings.
IDP Education notes that while student mobility trends have been influenced by geopolitical shifts, economic pressures, and visa uncertainties, the interest in international education remains robust. However, destination choices are now heavily weighted towards clear outcomes, employability, affordability, and certainty in post-study pathways.
Affordability and Visa Certainty as Key Hurdles
Financial constraints present a significant barrier for many. Among Indian students who have opted against studying abroad, 43% cited tuition costs as prohibitive, while 32% were deterred by rising living expenses. Visa-related concerns are also gaining prominence, with 28% identifying difficulties with visas as a major challenge.
The report underscores that visa feasibility has evolved from a late-stage hurdle to an early filter in the decision-making process. Prospective students now rigorously assess visa rules, associated costs, and post-study work opportunities much earlier. Key visa-related influences include:

Amidst these evolving priorities, Australia has emerged as the first-choice destination for 41% of Indian students. While the UK maintains its association with academic quality, other nations like the USA, Canada, and New Zealand are strongly linked to employability and post-study opportunities. The USA is noted for career connections and networks (34%) and strong career outcomes (46%), while New Zealand records the strongest association with post-study work rights (34%) and career outcomes (48%).
Informed Choices and Global Comparison
Globally, students are becoming more discerning. The 'Emerging Futures 9' report indicates that 78% of students are now seriously considering more than one destination, a notable increase from 66% in October 2024. This includes 36% considering two countries and 22% exploring three. While traditional destinations still lead in first-choice preferences, students are increasingly comparing countries based on visa requirements, upfront costs, career pathways, and perceived quality before committing to a final decision.
