Indian Stocks Surge: Sensex, Nifty Climb Over 1%, Investors Gain ₹4.18 Lakh Crore

· · 2 min read

Indian equity benchmarks Sensex and Nifty each surged over 1% on Wednesday, adding approximately ₹4.18 lakh crore to investor wealth. The rally was driven by strong performance in IT, metals, FMCG, and pharma sectors.

Indian equity benchmarks experienced a significant rally on Wednesday, with both the 30-share BSE Sensex and the broader NSE Nifty50 index climbing over 1% each. This robust performance translated into a substantial increase in investor wealth, adding an estimated ₹4.18 lakh crore to the combined market capitalization of BSE-listed companies.

Sensex and Nifty Performance

The BSE Sensex jumped 888.68 points, or 1.16%, to settle at 77,654.60. Concurrently, the NSE Nifty50 index advanced 264.85 points, or 1.10%, closing at 24,250.20. The broader market also mirrored this positive trend, with midcap and smallcap indices posting gains between 0.82% and 1.48%, signaling a renewed risk appetite among investors.

Key Drivers of the Rally

The upward movement was primarily fueled by sustained buying interest in information technology (IT) stocks, with metals, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and pharmaceutical shares also contributing significantly. Major Sensex gainers included HDFC Bank Ltd, Infosys Ltd, Bharti Airtel Ltd, Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T), Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), ICICI Bank Ltd, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS), and Tata Steel Ltd.

Analyst Insights and Market Sentiment

Ankur Punj, MD & Business Head at Equirus Wealth, highlighted that Indian equities outperformed several global indices, despite a rise in crude oil prices. He attributed this to renewed optimism in traditional IT stocks, noting the Nifty IT index's over 17% rally this month and positive Q1 earnings reports from frontline tech firms, which bolstered investor confidence.

Ajit Mishra, SVP (Research) at Religare Broking, added that improved investor sentiment stemmed from encouraging quarterly earnings from select companies and the continued strength of the IT sector. A stronger rupee further supported the positive mood, although market participants remained cautious ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and elevated crude oil prices continued to be monitored by investors.

Technical Outlook for Nifty

From a technical standpoint, Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, suggested that the Nifty is likely to maintain its strength in the near term, with potential to reach 24,450–24,500. He identified 24,100 as a key support level, stating that a fall below this point could weaken sentiment and lead to a decline towards 23,950.
