The Indian equity market is set for a holiday-shortened week, with both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) remaining closed on Friday, May 1, 2026. This closure is in observance of Maharashtra Day, a state holiday commemorating the official formation of Maharashtra in 1960.
Partial Operations for Commodity Exchange
While the primary stock exchanges will be fully shut, the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) will observe a partial closure. According to exchange data, MCX will suspend trading for its morning session, from 9 am to 5 pm. However, it will reopen for its evening session, resuming operations from 5 pm onwards.
Market Performance Before the Break
Leading into the long weekend, the market saw declines on Thursday. The Sensex fell 582.86 points, or 0.75 percent, to settle at 76,913.50. Similarly, the Nifty index slipped 180.10 points, or 0.74 percent, closing at 23,997.55.
