Indian equity benchmarks recorded further gains on Thursday, July 30, 2026, with the Sensex and Nifty indices closing higher. This positive momentum was largely attributed to robust buying interest in the automobile sector, complemented by a strong showing from select information technology (IT) counters.
The 30-share BSE Sensex advanced by 273.55 points, or 0.35 percent, to settle at 77,928.15. Concurrently, the broader NSE Nifty50 index climbed 66.95 points, marking a 0.28 percent increase, to conclude the trading session at 24,317.15.
Top Performers and Broader Market Trends
Among the leading gainers on the Sensex were prominent companies such as Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), HDFC Bank Ltd, State Bank of India (SBI), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M), Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, Bharti Airtel Ltd, Tech Mahindra Ltd, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd, and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
Despite the benchmark indices' ascent, the broader market experienced a slight underperformance. The Nifty Midcap100 declined by 0.35 percent, and the Nifty Smallcap100 registered a fall of 0.56 percent, indicating a more cautious sentiment outside of large-cap stocks.
Analyst Insights and Market Drivers
Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, highlighted that the US Federal Reserve's decision to maintain interest rates was widely anticipated. However, a continued hawkish stance on inflation control, coupled with a sharp uptick in US bond yields, signaled potential future rate hikes, keeping global investors on edge. Renewed crude oil volatility, stemming from West Asian tensions, further contributed to external uncertainties. Despite these global headwinds, domestic equities remained range-bound with intraday swings, supported by resilient domestic fundamentals, strengthening FII inflows, a firmer rupee, and encouraging Q1FY27 earnings, which prompted investors to view dips as selective buying opportunities.
Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that Indian equity markets demonstrated resilience, extending gains despite weak global cues. Strong domestic earnings and sector-specific buying helped offset concerns over renewed US-Iran hostilities and a deepening sell-off in Asian technology stocks. The auto sector emerged as the best-performing segment, advancing over 1 percent, following Mahindra & Mahindra's stronger-than-expected first-quarter results. The IT sector also continued its recent rally, outperforming despite weakness in Asian semiconductor and AI-related technology stocks, underscoring sustained investor preference for Indian software exporters.
Global Geopolitical Factors
Globally, the US-Iran conflict escalated with fresh US strikes on Iranian targets, spreading fighting across the Middle East, including an attack on an Egyptian port. These renewed hostilities kept the Strait of Hormuz largely closed, restricting shipping traffic and sustaining upward pressure on energy prices, thereby elevating geopolitical risk across markets.
Nifty Technical Outlook
From a technical perspective, Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, observed that the Nifty remained largely range-bound, failing to provide a clear directional move. Short-term sentiment is expected to remain positive, with the potential for the index to rise towards 24,500. On the downside, immediate support is identified at 24,200, below which the index might lose its current upward momentum.
