Indian equity benchmarks, the 30-share BSE Sensex and the broader NSE Nifty50, concluded Tuesday's trading session (July 28, 2026) with marginal losses. A mixed sectoral performance characterized the day, as weakness in fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) and energy stocks offset gains in the information technology (IT) sector.
The Sensex slipped 69.86 points, or 0.09 percent, to settle at 76,765.92. Concurrently, the Nifty50 index shed 10.60 points, a 0.04 percent decrease, closing at 23,985.35. Several prominent companies contributed to the decline, including Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL), ICICI Bank Ltd, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), HDFC Bank Ltd, and State Bank of India (SBI), alongside NTPC Ltd, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd, Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), and ITC Ltd.
Conversely, the IT sector emerged as the top performer, buoyed by renewed buying interest and attractive valuations. Realty and auto stocks also contributed positively to the market's performance, providing some counterbalance to the downward pressure from other sectors. Broader market indices largely ended flat, reflecting an overall cautious undertone among investors.
Market sentiment remained guarded ahead of the crucial US Federal Reserve policy meeting, prompting participants to refrain from taking aggressive positions. However, a decline in Brent crude prices, nearing the $84 per barrel mark due to easing geopolitical concerns, offered some relief to the market. The ongoing earnings season continued to drive stock-specific movements across various sectors.
Analyst Insights on Market Trends
Ajit Mishra, SVP (Research) at Religare Broking, noted the prevailing cautious investor sentiment linked to the upcoming US Federal Reserve policy announcement. He highlighted that while the market awaited the Fed's decision, the drop in Brent crude prices provided a positive impetus. Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, pointed to improving monsoon conditions and moderately better Q1FY27 earnings as factors strengthening the growth outlook. Nair also emphasized that the sustained recovery in IT stocks was supported by their attractive valuations.
Technical Outlook for Key Indices
From a technical perspective, Sachin Gupta of Choice Equity Broking outlined key levels for the Sensex. He stated that immediate support for the index is positioned around 76,200–76,300, with resistance seen in the 77,200–77,300 zone. Gupta added that as long as the Sensex maintains above its support area, the current recovery attempt is likely to persist. A decisive move above 77,200–77,300 could trigger fresh buying and extend the rally towards 77,700–78,000, while a break below 76,200 might invite renewed selling pressure.
For the Nifty, Rupak De of LKP Securities observed that the index remained range-bound, with typical monthly expiry volatility largely absent. He identified 24,050 as a strong resistance level and support around 23,920, with a lower support at 23,800. De suggested that a sustained move above 24,050 could provide the necessary strength for the Nifty to advance towards 24,500 in the short term.
