The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) recorded an unprecedented achievement on September 7, processing a historic 2,006,353 online train ticket bookings in a single day. This surge in demand was primarily attributed to the festive season's advanced reservation period, with the system maintaining high volumes, including 1.95 million bookings the following day.
Significant Platform Enhancements Drive Capacity
To manage this immense demand, IRCTC implemented substantial upgrades to its booking infrastructure. The entire ecosystem's capacity was approximately doubled through the introduction of new, high-performance servers replacing older ones. Beyond hardware augmentation, significant capacity enhancement was also achieved through comprehensive software optimization and architectural improvements, leading to a manifold increase over the previous system's capabilities.
A redesigned user interface (UI) was launched on July 15, offering a sleek, modern aesthetic inspired by global design trends. This new UI streamlines the booking journey, providing passengers with a more structured and easily digestible presentation of information. A key feature is the consolidated view of availability for multiple travel classes—such as Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, and AC 2 Tier—on a single screen, allowing for quick comparisons and informed decisions.
Combating Misuse and Streamlining Booking Trends
IRCTC has also focused on enhancing security and fairness in the booking process. Collaborating with a leading technology player, the corporation implemented Anti-BOT and Content Delivery Network (CDN) capabilities. This Anti-BOT technology has been highly effective, mitigating 55% to 65% of malicious BOT traffic in recent months, ensuring legitimate users have better access to tickets.
Current trends show that approximately 89% of all reserved tickets are booked online. While the first 15 minutes (8:00 AM to 8:15 AM) consistently record the highest concurrent demand, only 8.43% to 14.14% of bookings are completed within the first hour (8:00 AM to 9:00 AM), with over 85% successfully completed later in the day. To ensure equitable access, all authorized ticketing agents are prohibited from booking Advanced Reservation Period (ARP) tickets during the initial 10 minutes of the booking window.
Continuous action against misuse has resulted in the deactivation of approximately 30.4 million user IDs, with an additional 63.3 million IDs placed under revalidation. Furthermore, 16,041 suspicious email domains were blocked, and 592 complaints related to 421,000 suspicious PNRs were lodged on the Cyber Crime Portal, underscoring IRCTC's commitment to maintaining a secure and fair booking environment.
