Indian Bank Hikes Special FD Rates to 6.80%; How it Compares with Other Lenders

· · 3 min read

Indian Bank increased interest rates on its 555-day Ind Grow fixed deposit to 6.80% and 777-day Ind Prosper deposit to 6.75%, effective October 23, 2026. This revision positions its special-tenure deposits competitively among public sector banks.

Indian Bank has announced an increase in interest rates for two of its popular special fixed deposit (FD) schemes. The 555-day Ind Grow deposit now offers a rate of 6.80%, while the 777-day Ind Prosper deposit yields 6.75%. These revised rates became effective on October 23, 2026.

This move by the public sector lender comes as depositors actively compare returns across various banking segments, including other public sector banks, private lenders, and small finance banks.

Indian Bank's Rates Among Public Sector Peers

With the new 6.80% rate for its 555-day tenure, Indian Bank is now highly competitive within the public sector banking segment. According to recent bank-rate comparison data:

  • Bank of India offers up to 6.85% on a 999-day deposit.
  • Bank of Baroda provides 6.75% on a 555-day deposit.
  • Punjab National Bank and Canara Bank both offer maximum rates of 6.60%.

Indian Bank's revised rates make its special-tenure offerings quite attractive compared to many of its public sector counterparts.

Comparing with Private and Small Finance Banks

While Indian Bank's rates are strong within the public sector, the broader market, particularly small finance banks, often presents higher headline returns for specific tenures. However, it's crucial for depositors to consider the investment period required to achieve these maximum rates.

  • Suryoday Small Finance Bank leads with an impressive 8.25%, though this rate applies to a five-year deposit.
  • Utkarsh Small Finance Bank offers 8.10% for a 666-day tenure.
  • Jana Small Finance Bank provides 8.00% for a three-year deposit.

In the private sector, certain banks also offer elevated rates:

  • Bandhan Bank's maximum regular rate is 7.45% for a two-year deposit.
  • IDFC FIRST Bank offers up to 7.10% across tenures ranging from 500 days to three years.

Considerations Beyond Headline Rates

It's important for investors to look beyond just the highest advertised rate. Factors like the actual tenure matching their investment horizon, premature withdrawal conditions, and interest payout options significantly impact the effective return. For example, a 6.80% annual rate on ₹1 lakh would yield approximately ₹6,800 in interest over one year, whereas an 8.25% rate would generate ₹8,250, a difference of ₹1,450.

Deposit Safety and Insurance

Depositors should also consider the safety of their funds. In India, eligible bank deposits are insured by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank. This coverage includes both principal and interest, subject to applicable rules, providing a crucial safety net for investments.

Ultimately, while Indian Bank's latest rate hikes enhance its competitiveness among public sector lenders, a comprehensive comparison across all bank categories, factoring in tenure, liquidity needs, and deposit insurance limits, remains essential for depositors seeking optimal returns.
