India was forced to curtail a staggering 8.1 terawatt-hours (TWh) of solar power during the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 (April-June 2026), an amount sufficient to meet the annual electricity needs of approximately 1.4 million households. This significant reduction in clean energy generation occurred despite the nation experiencing record-high electricity demand, primarily driven by intense summer heatwaves.
Grid Bottlenecks and Operational Constraints
The curtailment, which refers to the deliberate reduction of electricity generation when the grid cannot absorb the produced power, was highest in May at 3.2 TWh, followed by 2.3 TWh each in April and June 2026. This issue stems from a combination of grid infrastructure challenges and the operational limitations of India's existing power generation fleet.
Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy and Power, Shripad Yesso Naik, informed Parliament that these restrictions are implemented to maintain grid security. He cited a critical mismatch between the commissioning schedules of new transmission lines and renewable energy projects as a primary factor. Essentially, solar power generation capacity is growing faster than the infrastructure required to transport that electricity across the national grid.
The Role of Coal Power Plants
A significant contributor to the problem is the operational inflexibility of India’s extensive coal-fired power plants. These plants are often required to operate above a minimum technical load, typically around 55% of their capacity. This requirement limits how much they can reduce their output during peak solar generation hours, even when overall electricity demand might dip due to milder weather or efficient daytime energy use.
Consequently, when solar power output peaks during the day, and coal plants must remain online to ensure stability and meet anticipated evening demand, grid operators are compelled to switch off available solar generation. This dynamic places immense pressure on the national grid infrastructure and has reportedly led many solar power developers to slow down the commissioning of new projects due to delays in evacuation infrastructure.
Energy Paradox Amidst Soaring Demand
The curtailment presents a paradox: India's peak power demand reached an unprecedented 270.82 GW on May 21, 2026, largely due to the widespread use of cooling appliances during severe heatwave conditions. Despite this soaring demand, the country was unable to fully utilize its clean solar energy potential, highlighting urgent needs for grid modernization and more flexible energy dispatch mechanisms to support its renewable energy transition goals.
