The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has announced the appointment of acclaimed economist Silvana Tenreyro as its next Chief Economist. She will also serve as the IMF's Economic Counsellor and Director of the Research Department, taking over from Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, who is returning to academia.
Professor Tenreyro, currently a distinguished Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics (LSE), is slated to begin her new role on August 10. Her appointment comes at a critical juncture for the global economy, which is navigating a complex landscape marked by persistent trade tensions, escalating geopolitical risks, and significant volatility in commodity markets. The IMF is particularly focused on mitigating the economic repercussions from developments in West Asia, which have previously influenced crude oil prices and contributed to inflationary and fiscal pressures in various emerging economies.
A Leader in Global Economic Policy
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva lauded Tenreyro's selection, emphasizing that her unique blend of academic rigor and practical policymaking experience will be instrumental in maintaining the Fund's analytical leadership. Georgieva highlighted that Tenreyro's expertise is crucial during a period characterized by "profound transformation and heightened uncertainty" for the global financial system.
Tenreyro brings a formidable background to the position. She served as an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) from 2017 to 2023, where she played a key role in shaping monetary policy responses to the economic shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent surge in inflation. Her prior experience also includes work at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and a tenure on the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Mauritius.
Academic Acclaim and Key Responsibilities
An internationally recognized macroeconomist, Silvana Tenreyro is a Fellow of several prestigious institutions, including the British Academy, the Econometric Society, and the Royal Economic Society. She has also previously held the presidency of the European Economic Association, underscoring her standing in the global economic community.
In her capacity as IMF Chief Economist, Professor Tenreyro will lead the Fund’s Research Department, overseeing the production of its influential flagship publications, such as the World Economic Outlook. Furthermore, she will be responsible for advising member countries on critical macroeconomic policy issues and strategies for maintaining global financial stability. Her leadership is expected to significantly contribute to the IMF's efforts to guide member nations through current and future economic challenges.
