The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Indore has announced its 2026-28 Post Graduate Programme (PGP) batch as its most diverse to date, setting new benchmarks for both gender and academic representation. For the second consecutive year, women students have outnumbered men, making up 54.4% of the incoming cohort.
Out of the 487 students admitted into the flagship MBA program this year, 265 are women. This continues a trend observed in the previous batch, which also saw women forming a majority. Beyond gender, the institute has significantly diversified its academic intake, with 54% of students hailing from non-engineering backgrounds.
Broadening Academic Horizons
Traditionally, Indian MBA programs have been dominated by engineering graduates. However, IIM Indore's latest batch demonstrates a deliberate shift. The new cohort includes graduates from a wide array of disciplines such as economics, medicine, journalism, psychology, agriculture, architecture, law, veterinary science, and fashion design, alongside the conventional engineering, technology, and computer science streams.
This academic breadth is complemented by professional experience, with nearly 43% of the batch bringing prior work experience to the classroom. This blend of varied academic paths and practical industry exposure is expected to enrich classroom discussions and foster diverse perspectives from the outset.
A Strategic Imperative for Diversity
Professor Himanshu Rai, Director of IIM Indore, highlighted that this increasing diversity is not accidental but the result of a sustained institutional strategy. He articulated that the institute views gender diversity as a crucial element that enhances learning environments, broadens viewpoints, and effectively prepares future leaders for an increasingly complex and dynamic business world.
Rai attributed the improved representation of women to several factors, including the integration of gender diversity considerations into the admissions process, dedicated faculty mentoring programs, awards recognizing the achievements of women, and a campus ecosystem designed to actively support women's leadership, wellness, and sports opportunities.
IIM Indore's latest admissions data reflects a broader shift within Indian business schools, where a balanced and diverse classroom is increasingly prioritized. This trend extends beyond just gender, encompassing the academic and professional backgrounds of those pursuing an MBA, signalling a progressive evolution in management education.
