HDFC Securities Backs Tech Mahindra, Coforge, Persistent as Top IT Picks

· · 3 min read

HDFC Securities has upgraded its stance on the IT sector from underweight to market weight, identifying Tech Mahindra, Coforge, and Persistent as its preferred mid-cap stock picks. The brokerage sees compelling upside potential in these companies, moving away from larger, more crowded sector leaders.

HDFC Securities Shifts IT Sector Stance

HDFC Securities has revised its outlook on the information technology (IT) sector, moving it from an 'underweight' to a 'market weight' position within its model portfolio. This strategic shift highlights a renewed focus on specific mid-cap IT firms, with Tech Mahindra, Coforge, and Persistent emerging as the brokerage's top selections.

According to the firm, these companies now present a more compelling risk-reward profile compared to the sector's traditional, larger leaders, following a period of market weakness. This tactical adjustment signals a nuanced approach to IT investments amidst evolving market dynamics.

Why Mid-Caps Over Crowded Leaders?

Devesh Wakani, Head of Prime Research at HDFC Securities, elaborated on the firm's portfolio change, stating a clear preference for Tech Mahindra, Coforge, and Persistent among the IT names under their coverage. Wakani emphasized that these particular stocks have target prices set higher than their current market valuations, indicating strong conviction in their growth potential.

"We are not chasing the biggest software exporters. Instead, we're leaning into what we describe as not the top four, but the mid-cap IT likes of Persistent, Coforge and Tech Mahindra," Wakani noted, highlighting where the brokerage identifies significant market opportunities.

This decision comes as Indian equities navigate complex global cues, inconsistent earnings momentum, and shifts in sector leadership. HDFC Securities' preference reflects a belief that valuation comfort and clear earnings visibility in these mid-cap companies can drive a re-rating.

Tech Mahindra in Sharper Focus

Among the three highlighted companies, Tech Mahindra has notably captured increased attention within HDFC Securities' analytical framework. The brokerage recently published a report on Tech Mahindra, assigning a higher target price, which underscores a refreshed positive outlook on the stock's near-to-medium-term prospects.

This emphasis on specific, covered names with explicit upside targets signifies that the move to market weight is driven by high-conviction bets rather than a passive, broad-based allocation adjustment across the IT sector.

Broader Market Context and Investment Message

The recalibration of IT exposure by HDFC Securities aligns with its continued preference for sectors such as banking, financials, and defense in its advised portfolios. However, the latest commentary clearly indicates a shifting opportunity set within technology, favoring selective mid-cap plays that are poised for potential outperformance if earnings recovery broadens and market sentiment remains supportive.

For investors, the message from the brokerage is clear: while it is no longer underweight on IT, the approach to capital allocation remains highly selective, pinpointing where the next wave of returns is most likely to originate.
