Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has strongly refuted claims suggesting widespread problems with E20 ethanol-blended petrol, dismissing such reports as a "misrepresentation." Speaking on the matter, Puri emphasized that both automobile manufacturers and consumers have embraced the fuel, with no evidence of significant issues.
E20 Acceptance and Current Usage
Minister Puri highlighted the extensive use of ethanol-blended petrol across India. According to his statements, approximately 20 crore (200 million) two-wheelers and 20 lakh (2 million) four-wheelers are currently operating on ethanol-blended fuels. He noted that the transition to E20 has been in effect since April 2025, following three and a half years of E15 usage, providing ample time to assess its performance. "The automobile manufacturers, as well as the people who service these vehicles, all say there is no difficulty," Puri stated, questioning the sudden interest in alleged problems.
Cautious Approach to E25 and E85 Rollout
Addressing suggestions for India to move towards E25 petrol, Puri outlined a cautious approach. He affirmed that any decision regarding E25 will only be made after comprehensive technical tests are completed and their findings are thoroughly discussed with automotive industry stakeholders. "If someone is suggesting E25, we have made it clear that we are conducting tests. Those tests will take time," he explained.
Regarding E85 fuel, the minister provided an update on its initial rollout. He indicated that the process has only recently commenced and will require considerable time to establish the necessary supporting infrastructure, including new petrol pumps. The government's broader objective for the Ethanol Blended Petrol program is to achieve 20 percent ethanol blending nationwide, aiming to reduce dependence on imported fuel and provide support to farmers. Puri reiterated that this transition would continue in carefully planned phases, guided by technical data and ongoing consultations with industry experts.
