Global Market Selloff: Sensex, Nifty Hit as US Inflation Fuels Fed Rate Hike Fears

· · 2 min read

Asian markets, including Korea's Kospi and Japan's Nikkei, tumbled sharply after US headline inflation accelerated to 3.7%. This higher-than-expected data intensified fears of further Federal Reserve rate hikes, impacting global investment sentiment.

Global stock markets are experiencing a significant selloff, with India's Sensex and Nifty indices facing a weak global backdrop. The downturn follows an unexpected acceleration in US consumer price inflation, which has heightened concerns about aggressive monetary policy from the Federal Reserve.

Asian Markets Plummet on Inflation News

Asian bourses reacted sharply to the US inflation figures. Korea's benchmark Kospi index plunged 7.6%, with major chipmakers like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each seeing a 9% drop. Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 4.53%, closing at 64,659.88. Other key regional indices also saw substantial declines: Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 1%, China's mainland Shanghai Composite dipped 1.45%, and Taiwan's TAIEX dropped 2.79%.

Overnight, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite in the US settled 1.88% lower, indicating broader market apprehension.

US Inflation Exceeds Expectations, Sparks Fed Concerns

The catalyst for the global downturn was the US headline inflation rate, which accelerated to 3.7%, surpassing the estimated 3.6%. Core inflation also rose to 2.6%. According to Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder & CEO of HST Wealth, this data suggests that rising energy costs are reinforcing underlying price pressures, increasing the likelihood of another Federal Reserve rate increase or a prolonged period of restrictive policy.

While the US 10-year treasury yield saw a modest decline to 5.19%, Radhakrishnan noted that this offers little reassurance as yields remain near multi-decade highs. He emphasized that upcoming US producer-price and retail-sales reports will be crucial in determining the trajectory of yields and their implications for the dollar and foreign portfolio flows into emerging markets.

Geopolitical Tensions Add to Market Woes

Adding to the economic uncertainty, renewed Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia have escalated fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East. Reports of cargo ships sinking near the Strait of Hormuz have further intensified concerns over maritime security and global oil flows. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, highlighted that this crisis risks prolonged supply constraints, keeping crude prices elevated and inflationary pressures in focus.

As the domestic market prepares to open, Gift Nifty futures were trading relatively flat. Investors are closely watching how the Indian market will interpret the widespread Asian selloff – whether as a reversal in AI-related investments or a broader inflation-induced global economic challenge.
