Former IMF Deputy MD Gita Gopinath described her unique two-hour meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei, where he "started writing equations." Gopinath was struck by Milei's unwavering conviction in his economic vision for Argentina.

Former International Monetary Fund (IMF) Deputy Managing Director Gita Gopinath recently shared insights into her most memorable encounters with world leaders during her tenure. Speaking at the 'We The Women' event in London, Gopinath highlighted Argentine President Javier Milei as a particularly unique figure who left a lasting impression on her.

Gopinath recounted a distinctive two-hour, one-on-one conversation with President Milei, an economist by profession. She described how their discussion quickly evolved into an impromptu economics session. "He started writing equations on a piece of paper, and we were staring at it, and so that was fun. That's rare," Gopinath noted, emphasizing the unusual nature of the exchange.

What most struck the former IMF official was President Milei's profound conviction. She observed, "But he's somebody who had a hell of a lot of belief in what he was doing... You need a vision. You need a strategy." Gopinath emphasized that Milei demonstrated an unwavering certainty in his objectives for Argentina.

Despite potential differences in economic philosophies, Gopinath expressed her enjoyment of the thoughtful conversation. She stated, "No, it was great. I enjoyed having that conversation... We don't agree on everything in terms of how economies work, but he was really thoughtful."

President Javier Milei, a libertarian economist, assumed office in Argentina in December 2023, inheriting an economy grappling with severe challenges, including triple-digit inflation, significant fiscal deficits, and foreign exchange shortages. Since then, his administration has implemented rigorous austerity measures, reduced public spending, pursued fiscal surpluses, and eased currency controls.

These policies have contributed to a sharp reduction in inflation, with monthly rates falling to multi-year lows. International institutions, including the IMF, have acknowledged the progress made on inflation and fiscal reforms under Milei's leadership.
