Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday laid the foundation stone and dedicated six crucial National Highway projects in Meghalaya. Valued at ₹3,214 crore, these initiatives are set to significantly enhance connectivity within the state and bolster regional links, including those with neighboring Bangladesh.
The projects were formally launched at Polo Ground in Shillong, with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, state ministers, legislators, and senior government officials in attendance. The comprehensive package targets improved traffic flow, enhanced road safety, and stronger cross-border ties.
Key Projects and Strategic Impact
The newly launched projects include vital bypasses and road upgrades designed to alleviate congestion and improve access across Meghalaya:
- Pynursla Bypass: Expected to ease traffic and improve access to Dawki and the India-Bangladesh border.
- Jowai Bypass: Already operational, this bypass has successfully reduced traffic bottlenecks and enhanced commuter safety.
- Tura Bypass: Designed to divert through-traffic away from densely populated areas, improving connectivity towards the Dalu border.
- Selsella–Simbukolgre–Goeragre Road: This project will strengthen connectivity in West Garo Hills and provide a crucial link to the upcoming Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge, a four-lane structure over the Brahmaputra.
- Shillong–Dawki Corridor: A strategically important route connecting Meghalaya with Bangladesh via Tamabil, this corridor is expected to significantly reduce travel time, ease congestion in Upper Shillong, and boost connectivity for trade and tourism.
Boosting Economic Growth and Regional Integration
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that these projects are anticipated to stimulate economic activity across the state. They are expected to boost tourism in popular destinations like Dawki and Cherrapunji, while also facilitating cross-border trade through key checkpoints such as Dawki and Dalu.
Improved connectivity will also benefit local agriculture, handicrafts, and small businesses by providing better access to markets. Furthermore, these infrastructure developments are crucial for improving access to healthcare and emergency services in remote regions of Meghalaya.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Gadkari reaffirmed the Central government's commitment to developing modern highway infrastructure throughout Meghalaya and the entire Northeast region. He emphasized that these efforts, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aim to ensure faster, safer, and more efficient transportation for all.
