In a significant diplomatic breakthrough at the BRICS Summit, Iran and the United Arab Emirates have reached a consensus on language calling for restraint in the ongoing West Asia conflict. The agreement is encapsulated in a joint BRICS declaration that emphasizes de-escalation, the protection of civilians, and the safeguarding of critical trade, energy flows, and maritime security in the region.
This marks a notable step forward in relations between Tehran and Abu Dhabi, whose ties have been strained by the six-month-old conflict. The consensus achieved at the summit contrasts with the lack of agreement on the same issue during the BRICS foreign ministers' meeting in May.
The declaration expresses “deep concern over the continued escalation of tensions in Middle East/West Asia” and calls for “exercising maximum restraint, as well as avoiding actions that could further aggravate the situation.” It also underscores the importance of adhering to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
Highlighting the diplomatic efforts, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on the sidelines of the New Delhi summit. This interaction represents the highest-level meeting between the two nations since the conflict began, with discussions focusing on regional and international issues, stability, and efforts to advance peace and development.
The agreement comes amidst a backdrop of resumed tit-for-tat strikes between the United States and Iran, and past Iranian attacks on UAE targets, including the Al Minhad Air Base which houses US forces. Summit organizers and diplomats reportedly prioritized bridging the Iran-UAE divide.
The BRICS declaration is seen as a powerful demonstration of unity within the expanded bloc, which now includes both Iran and the UAE. Leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that BRICS has “come of age” and its consensus should translate into concrete global results, while Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed the bloc's role in steering the international order towards greater equity and justice.
