NEW YORK – Kevin Naughton Jr., a software engineer formerly employed at Google, made headlines for his unconventional career move: stepping away from an annual salary of approximately ₹3.3 crore ($350,000) to pursue entrepreneurship. Naughton Jr. revealed that despite the lucrative compensation, he always knew his long-term ambition was to work for himself.
The Impetus for a Career Shift
Naughton Jr. described his position at Google as “the best nine-to-five job” he could have envisioned, yet it didn't align with his ultimate goals. A significant turning point arrived in 2022 with the passing of his father, which he cited as a profound “wake-up call” to prioritize personal happiness and pursue his true aspirations.
Building a Strategic Safety Net
His departure from Google was not a rash decision but a meticulously planned transition. Naughton Jr., who also previously worked at Amazon, emphasized the importance of financial preparedness. He strategically saved enough funds to cover several years of living expenses, providing a crucial runway to develop and launch his startup without immediate salary pressure.
A friend’s advice solidified his plan: if he could sustain himself for three years without an income, he should dedicate that time to building his business. The understanding was that he could always return to traditional employment if his venture did not succeed.
Introducing Ferryman.io
Eight months after tendering his resignation, Naughton Jr. officially launched Ferryman.io. This Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) tool is designed to automate content distribution across multiple social media platforms, including LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and Threads. The concept for Ferryman emerged from Naughton Jr.’s own challenges as a content creator.
Within approximately three months of its launch, Ferryman.io began generating over $600 in monthly recurring revenue (MRR), demonstrating early user adoption and retention. This initial success validates Naughton Jr.'s calculated risk to transition from a high-earning corporate role to the dynamic world of tech entrepreneurship.
